About The Position

HII's corporate team is responsible for providing strategic direction across technological and business disciplines, including accounting, finance, human resources, sales, operations, business development, legal, sustainability, communications, information technology, security, and more. HII - America’s largest shipbuilder and a global, all-domain defense provider- has an exciting opportunity for a 2027 Legal Summer intern at our office in Newport News, Virginia! With a 140 year history of advancing U.S. national defense, this minimum 10 week Corporate summer internship opportunity will allow students to gain experience in areas such as business, finance, information technology, and legal and government affairs, as well as being able to support the leaders who are driving the future of HII! Upon conclusion of the internship, the Summer Intern should have a general understanding of the duties of an in-house counsel at a publicly traded company.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in a Juris Doctorate program at an accredited law school
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (Official transcripts will be required)
  • Be continuing in a Juris Doctorate program in the fall following the internship
  • Work a 40-hour work week for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer
  • A valid email address is required when applying, receiving communication, and obtaining employment offers

Nice To Haves

  • Interest or coursework in: government contracting, commercial contracts, labor and employment, intellectual property, corporate law, compliance, litigation, or in-house practice.

Responsibilities

  • Attend law department staff meetings
  • Review Teaming Agreements and Nondisclosure Agreements
  • Draft letters or other documents as necessary
  • Legal research and prepare memoranda
  • Attend meetings with the business units
  • Attend meetings with outside counsel
  • Perform additional assignments as requested
