About The Position

The Southwest Airlines' Corporate Facilities Intern will support a variety of projects within the Corporate Facilities Team. This team is responsible for the design and construction of facilities utilized by Southwest Airlines, including airport facilities, Reservations Centers, Maintenance Hangars, Crew Bases, and Provisioning Bases, as well as renovating and expanding existing facilities system-wide. This is a 12-week paid internship from May 18 – August 8, 2027, with a pay rate of $21-$24 per hour. The internship will be conducted at our Dallas, TX headquarters facility, requiring 40 hours per week. Interns will receive free, unlimited space-available travel privileges and any required equipment, such as a laptop.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated interest in facilities maintenance and building operations
  • Familiarity with commercial building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical infrastructure
  • Exposure to asset management and maintenance planning practices
  • Familiarity with vendor and contractor coordination
  • Exposure to project coordination and facilities support activities
  • Ability to support documentation, reporting, and operational recordkeeping
  • Strong critical-thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to identify innovative solutions that improve efficiency and enhance value

  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, customer payment and refund policies, banking, and the analysis and reporting of financial data
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing Customer and personal services including Customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of Customer Satisfaction
  • Skilled in collecting, organizing, visualizing, and assimilating data, including turning raw data into meaningful information using ad hoc reporting tools, data-oriented programming languages, and visualization software
  • Skilled in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • Routinely goes beyond simple numerical checks in quality control
  • Maintains high quality even in complex situations with tight deadlines
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
  • Progress toward a degree, major, or minor in Architecture, Finance, Business Administration, Construction Management, Data Analytics, Economics, Facilities Management, Industrial Engineering, Information Systems, Interior Design, Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, or similar degree required.
  • To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by your university) at the time of application and during the internship.
  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application.
  • U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. required and no current or future work authorization sponsorship available.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic experience with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Adobe Suite (InDesign, Illustrator).
  • Basic understanding of architectural or interior design principles.
  • Familiarity with space planning, material selection, and design trends.
  • Ability to use active listening skills to learn and understand other perspectives and the impacts of a project on their processes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas using multiple forms of communication, adjusting tone, style, and content to meet the audience’s needs.

Responsibilities

  • Support HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and mechanical system inspections
  • Create, update, and close maintenance work orders within Southwest CMMS/IWMS
  • Conduct routine inspections of buildings, grounds, and common areas
  • Prepare inspection reports and assist with corrective action tracking
  • Assist in coordinating vendor and contractor activities
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and reports
  • Assist with safety audits and compliance inspections
  • Support small facility improvement and renovation projects
  • Help evaluate opportunities to improve facility reliability and maintenance effectiveness
  • Drive internal and cross-departmental initiatives in support of Facilities strategy and continuous process improvement
  • Deliver process enhancements and special projects across the Facilities function
  • Perform project oversight to ensure teamwork is planned, executed, and reported on in a timely manner and with high quality
  • Perform and interpret ad hoc research and analysis to assist with driving decisions
  • Develop accurate, timely, and comprehensive reports to facilitate management decision-making
  • Research and provide best practice recommendations for a variety of stakeholders
  • Assist in data preparation and perform quality assurance on dashboards and reports
  • Validate technology project test case results meet expected financial and operational outcomes
  • Document findings in accordance with guidelines and report results to team members
  • Analyze data and notify department leaders of unusual trends or anomalies
  • Analyze potential financial or operational risks from technology system upgrades or projects and recommend test case scenarios to mitigate risk
  • Collaborate with team members and internal customers to ensure work is completed within timelines; escalate risk where appropriate
  • Update team members and department leaders on project status and outcomes
  • Provide potential impact analysis to leadership when accounting or operational system issues occur
  • Collaborate with team members to identify, troubleshoot, and overcome challenges and defects
  • Examine and evaluate financial and information systems, recommending controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity
  • May perform other job duties as directed by employee’s leaders.
