About The Position

The Fresh Market (TFM) currently has an opening for a Corporate Counsel to join the in-house legal team in our Store Support Center (099). The Corporate Counsel will be responsible for providing practical, day-to-day legal support across a broad range of employment matters. This role will partner closely with HR and Retail Operations on counseling, litigation, compliance, contracts, workplace safety, ADA-related issues, and other employment law matters affecting our multi-state retail business. The position will be hybrid, requiring approximately three (3) days in the office with the ability to work remotely otherwise.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active licensure in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Approximately 3 years of employment law experience, including handling EEOC and state agency charges
  • Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills
  • Sound judgment, strong attention to detail, and a practical business-oriented approach

  • In-house experience or experience supporting multi-state clients preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Advise HR and Retail Operations on various employment matters, including hiring, discipline, accommodations, wage and hour compliance, workplace policies, and labor management
  • Manage and execute responses to EEOC and state agency charges by coordinating investigations, drafting position statements, and ensuring timely, defensible submissions
  • Oversee employment outside counsel across jurisdictions by directing strategy, approving key work product, and ensuring compliance with company guidelines and cost controls
  • Support HR matters involving immigration, employee litigation, internal investigations, and employment compliance
  • Partner with Retail Operations on Asset Protection, Facilities, team member and guest safety, and guest experience matters
  • Draft, review, and negotiate HR-related contracts and employment documents, including offer letters, separation agreements, handbooks
  • Advise on team member safety, OSHA matters, and ADA litigation involving facilities, construction, and design
  • Monitor federal, state, and local employment law developments affecting multi-state retail operations.
  • In addition to the key responsibilities outlined above, the Corporate Counsel may be required to undertake additional responsibilities and projects as directed by the General Counsel. This includes providing support on special assignments, conducting legal research, handling due diligence/transactional matters, participating in cross-functional initiatives, and assisting with various other legal matters as needed to ensure the smooth operation of the Legal Department.
