About The Position

The State of Maine Judicial Branch is seeking motivated law enforcement officers, or those with a minimum of Phase 1 pre-service training, to join their dedicated team. The Office of Judicial Marshals is a law enforcement agency responsible for ensuring a safe, accessible, efficient, and impartial system of dispute resolution within the court system. With 31 courts across the state processing over 130,000 cases annually, Judicial Branch employees play a vital role in supporting Maine's residents.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or GED).
  • Three (3) years of experience as a full time Deputy Judicial Marshal or similar relevant experience.
  • College coursework or advanced supervisory law enforcement training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check, including ALERT test, FBI fingerprint clearance, verification of education and experience, medical and psychological review, polygraph examination, and criminal and motor vehicle record checks.
  • Completed the Maine Criminal Justice Academy 100-hour reserve law enforcement officer training.
  • Have and maintain qualification to utilize firearms and other defensive weapons according to Maine Criminal Justice Academy standards.
  • Have and maintain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Must maintain law enforcement certification through the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Knowledge of and ability to effectively use crisis interaction skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use restraint and defensive tactics.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • Ability to organize and supervise the security operations in the assigned courts.
  • Ability to train security and court personnel regarding procedures for internal and external emergencies, safeguards, and precautions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written communications.
  • Ability to interact effectively with judges/justices, other court staff, attorneys, and the general public in a variety of situations and circumstances.
  • Ability to interact well with people in difficult and stressful situations.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information discretely.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate security devices, alarm systems, and communication equipment.
  • Knowledge of Courthouse Emergency Plans in all assigned court locations, including plans for detention area security.
  • Knowledge of court procedures, legal documents, and legal processes.
  • Conforms to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Office of Judicial Marshal Services, including policies regarding infectious disease exposure control.
  • Successfully complete the Basic Maine Judicial Marshals Training Program under Title 25 §2804-E.
  • Must receive and maintain certification as a law enforcement officer as required by law.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises Deputy Judicial Marshals in the absence of the Sergeant.
  • Provides for the safety and security of judges, court staff, jurors, witnesses, other court participants, and the general public.
  • Potentially responsible for Deputy Judicial Marshals at several locations within a geographic region in the absence of the Sergeant.
  • Performs duties of entry screening as the first line of defense for the court system.
  • Travels and works in different locations within the state with minimum notice; night and weekend assignments are possible.
  • Assists the Sergeant in coordinating all judicial marshal services, including trials, emergency procedures, courthouse safety, security training, threat assessment, health and safety procedures, and coordination with law enforcement agencies.
  • Performs duties in the absence of the Sergeant, as directed.
  • Supervises Deputy Judicial Marshals, including planning, assigning, and reviewing work, in the absence of the Sergeant or as requested.
  • Manages security arrangements for each court day and session as needed.
  • Responsible for the daily scheduling and assignment of Deputy Judicial Marshals under command, in the absence of the Sergeant or as requested.
  • Performs all duties and assignments consistent with the duties of Deputy Judicial Marshals.
  • May assist within the court room with the orderly flow of paperwork and movement of evidence.
  • Supervises and maintains a presence in public areas of court facilities as needed.
  • Ensures that the duties and job assignments of Deputy Judicial Marshals are carried out in accordance with directives.
  • Directs persons to building locations and provides information on court schedules and proceedings.
  • Works on special projects as assigned and needed in the absence of the Sergeant.
  • May assist and/or participate in high-risk trial planning and scheduling, threat assessment, and special details.
  • Maintains oversight of all issued equipment.
  • Oversees general security for jury pools, jurors, and witnesses when Superior Court is in session.
  • Assists and oversees the checking and testing of alarm systems, and monitors electronic consoles.
  • Ensures entry screening is in operation, if possible, as directed by policy.
  • Assists and oversees the writing and filing of incident case reports, arrest reports, etc.
