About The Position

This Officer performs work in the supervision, custody and non-professional counseling of inmates at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility on an assigned shift. This officer directs inmate activities in cellblocks, housing units, day rooms, work areas and recreation areas. The officer observes inmates from tower, on corridors, and in visiting areas to ensure security is maintained and all facility rules are adhered to. The office provides guidance and advice in assisting inmates in their adjustment to and participation in correctional processes. This officer’s work varies from duties where there is direct involvement with inmates to work where there is limited contact with inmates and visitors. This officer is directly supervised and his performance is reviewed for adherence to facility rules and procedures.

Requirements

Knowledge of Bureau of Corrections Minimum Standards; Facility Rules, Regulations and Procedures Luzerne County Correctional Facility Code of Ethics.
Knowledge of Inmate Resocialization Procedures
Knowledge of Individual Group Behavior Patterns
Knowledge of Search and Inspection Procedures
Knowledge of Basic First-Aid Procedures
Knowledge of Housekeeping Activities
Knowledge of Security and Fire Safety Practices.
Use of Firearms.
Riot Procedures.
Self Defense
Cope with crisis situations.
Follow orders explicitly
Relate to persons from any race, creed, or color.
Read, write, and speak English effectively.
Direct activities of inmates under restraint in an understanding and effective manner.
Observe and report any changes in inmate personality, demeanor, attitude and program participation.
Remember names and faces.
Pass a physical and psychological examination administered by the Luzerne County Correctional Facility Physician.
A high school diploma or G.E.D.
Successfully completed training at the state sponsored officer cadet school or equivalent accredited training.
First aid and firearms training certifications
Not sustained any major violations for a period of three (3) years prior to the expiration date of the posting announcing the positions' availability, and none since posting.
Four (4) years continuous service as a correctional officer at LCCF, with at least one thousand (1,000) days of compensable status.

Responsibilities

Reports to Line Sergeants and Lieutenants
Stationed on assigned floor.
Ensure that all security measures are followed.
Ensure that all rounds and cell checks are being made by Staff.
Supervise the dispensing of medications, commissary, mail and meals as delivered to the Floors.
Monitor all movement of inmates of and off floor.
Ensure that the block is kept clean and orderly.
Maintain a log on shake downs.
Maintain control of the block to ensure the safety of the staff as well as the inmates.
Has the ability to discipline both inmates and staff.
Approve breaks for staff and monitor their time.
Communicate with his/her counterpart any and all information during the shift change before leaving the post.
Must be able to communicate and work effective with staff.
Relate to inmates without discrimination regardless of race, creed, color, religion, or criminal charges.
Abide by all SOP, Rules and Regulations, Post Orders and Code of Ethics governing this Facility.
Any Employee, in an extreme emergency will perform some type of security function within the facility as directed by the Administration/Supervision.
Maintain and supervise all Logs.
All other duties as assigned.
