About The Position

The Core Research Facility Technician II supports biobanking of human tissue, histology, and sample distribution for the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes (nPOD) and the Cardiovascular Repository for Type 1 Diabetes (CaRe-T1D) within the Organ Processing and Pathology Core (OPPC) of the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine. This role involves performing complex procedures and techniques to support OPPC functions, including case processing, sample management, data generation, lab maintenance, and contributing to scientific understanding through literature review and SOP development.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and 3 years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience working with human tissue, DNA / RNA extraction, and cell isolation
  • Histology experience working with human tissue such as pancreas, heart, kidney, lymph nodes, spleen and others
  • High attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • High proficiency in MS Office, especially Access and Excel
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and inventories
  • Interpersonal/human relations skills

Responsibilities

  • Perform case processing including receipt of tissue, scanning in microCT scanner, gross and fine dissection, tissue fixation, freezing, cell isolation, and sample storage.
  • Provide on-call tissue grossing support for the nPOD and CARE-T1D programs.
  • Respond to sample requests. Assist with sample archiving and retrieval for distribution.
  • Operate multiple laboratory information management systems for sample tracking and histology.
  • Assist in coordinating sample distributions and sample inventory management.
  • Assist with generating and collecting data.
  • Perform slide scanning for Online Pathology systems and slide archival.
  • Assist with routine lab maintenance including ordering, calibrating, and checking equipment for proper function.
  • Assist with periodic preventative maintenance on Core instruments.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and arrange for or help with repairs.
  • Review scientific literature to maintain and further understanding of Core technologies.
  • Review facility use data for reports.
  • Edit and write SOPs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
