About The Position

The State of Montana has a decentralized human resources (HR) system. Each agency is responsible for its own recruitment and selection. The Copywriter reports to the Communication Director and is responsible for the development of content for all the Department’s various programs. The Copywriter coordinates with subject matter experts in the drafting and editing of press releases, web articles, newsletters and print material as needed. This position also reviews documents to ensure they meet Commerce brand standards, AP Style guidelines and are remediated to meet Section 508 (ADA) guidelines.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in English, creative or technical writing, journalism, marketing, communications or a similar field.
  • Applicable experience in copywriting, copyediting or similar fields.
  • Knowledge of professional writing and communication styles with Section 508 (ADA) compliance and document remediation software or the ability to learn.
  • Knowledge of project management.
  • Knowledge of brand guidelines and standards and how to implement them.
  • Knowledge of writing for media, press releases, copy editing.
  • Knowledge of writing for web, social and other digital channels.
  • Knowledge of user experience and design.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word and PowerPoint templates and forms.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to stay organized and efficiently manage files and information.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in their work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor and colleagues.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a group.
  • Ability to quickly become familiar with Commerce programs and structure.
  • Applicants selected for an interview will be asked to provide three samples of original writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite and Acrobat a plus.
  • Social media, email listserv and website management.
