About The Position

This position is not open to applicants residing in or otherwise based in California, New York, Illinois, or Massachusetts. Additionally, applicants must be located in the Eastern, Central, Mountain, or Pacific time zones. As a Copy Editor, you will work with Instructional Designers (IDs) and Quality Assurance (QA) to support the development of innovative online courses. You will collaborate virtually with team members and edit a variety of subjects for clarity, consistency, and accuracy. You will also work with the Design Lead, Editorial team, and Program Team Lead to keep them informed of issues that impact course design as well as the development and delivery of the project. This is a remote, part-time, hourly, 1099 independent contractor role. Contractors can expect to contribute approximately 25 or more hours per week and have autonomy in managing their work schedule, provided that deadlines, quality standards, and agreed-upon deliverables are met.

Requirements

  • BA in English (or related field); MA preferred
  • 3+ years of professional copyediting experience (preferably in an educational/academic setting)
  • A keen eye for detail and inconsistencies
  • A desire to make others' work shine and improve student learning experiences
  • Superior writing, organization, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a history of positive results achieved collaboratively
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence across complex organizational structures
  • Ability to apply edits strictly within defined scope boundaries
  • Comfortable working across multiple projects with tight deadlines
  • Flexibility and adaptability in the face of changing processes, evolving project needs, and so forth
  • Strong working knowledge of SharePoint, especially its collaboration features
  • Familiarity with Slack, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and other online communication tools
  • Familiarity with ADA compliance and willingness to learn more in this area
  • Knowledge of quality standards for course design (e.g., Quality Matters, OSCQR)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in curriculum/instructional design, course development, and/or education preferred
  • Experience in online course development for higher education is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit a variety of instructional documents, such as course blueprints
  • Collaborate across the organization to ensure high-quality deliverables
  • Field questions about grammar, mechanics, and style
  • Apply current APA and Chicago style guidelines
