About The Position

The mandate of the Safety, Compliance, Training and Development Service is to provide training and development, safety and compliance, and quality and continuous improvement of bus, para transit and light transit services. Services and programs include appropriate safety and job training for transit employees, and the compliance, development and implementation of safety standards to protect the general public. You serve as coordinator of all operational training activities for transit services, providing/ensuring the provision of a wide range of training activities, instruction and classroom and/or on-street training for new bus operators, Para Transpo drivers, light rail operators, Transit maintenance personnel, refresher training for in-house staff and training for summer, co-op students, transitway users and others. You also provide functional expertise and support to Transit Services via various committees, including accident review, and technical advisory, and work closely with the Program Manager and Section Manager to ensure adherence to the Ministry of Ontario’s (MTO) Driving Certification Program (DCP).

Requirements

  • Completion of 3 year community college diploma or university degree in Education, Public or Business Administration, Organizational Development, Training or Human Resources or other closely related academic fields including courses towards a certificate in Adult Education.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of adult education in a transit or operational environment.
  • 3 years of experience in an operator training capacity.
  • Knowledge of Conventional Operations, Transit, Maintenance, Rail Operators and Para Transpo
  • Knowledge of the issues/theories/practices/principles involved in the provision of training
  • Understanding of how scheduling systems relate to the structure/function of other planning, information and operational systems, and costs
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
  • Proven ability to work independently, with minimum supervision, and collaboratively with all staff as part of a team
  • Able to lead, coach, support, train and motivate staff, coordinate/assign work, and manage work quality, scheduling and completion
  • Possess organizational skills and flexibility to plan, initiate, organize and prioritize own work and that of others, and to deal effectively with multiple demands, conflicting priorities, pressures and deadlines
  • Able to deal with sensitive and/or confidential work situations

  • Must complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.
