About The Position

The Coordinator of Secondary Education will assist in the formulation of a philosophy and objectives for the instructional program at the secondary level. This role guides the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and instructional services for secondary education. The coordinator will stay informed about developments in curriculum and instruction at the secondary level, providing leadership in determining their appropriateness for the district's educational program. This position directs the creation and editing of all district-prepared secondary curriculum guides and materials for instructional staff. The coordinator also serves as the district's liaison for secondary level curriculum and instructional matters from the State Department of Education, studies, evaluates, and recommends new secondary level instructional materials, methods, and programs. Additionally, this role assists in reviewing and evaluating district-wide testing programs, provides leadership for the Title I program and other federal programs, and assists with course additions, grade placement, credit allowance, and graduation requirements. The coordinator will also assist in coordinating general curriculum with other curricular areas and in budget preparation for instructional programs, including the selection and purchase of textbooks. This role assumes leadership in developing secondary level curriculum for newly mandated courses and performs other assigned tasks, maintaining confidentiality and attending board meetings as requested.

Requirements

  • A valid Alabama certificate in the area of superintendent/principal, or supervisor.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in K-12 education as a classroom teacher and having administrative experience.
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
  • Professional experience or graduate work in education in the areas of curriculum development, supervision, and/or instructional practices.
  • Experience in curriculum planning, implementation, evaluation, and successful supervisory experience.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the formulation of a philosophy and objectives for the instructional program at the secondary level.
  • Guides development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and instructional services for secondary education.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in curriculum and instruction at the secondary level, and provides leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the district’s educational program.
  • Directs creation of and edits for publication of all district-prepared secondary curriculum guides and materials prepared by and to be distributed among the instructional staff.
  • Serves as the district’s liaison in securing and disseminating information on all secondary level curriculum and instructional-related matters from the State Department of Education.
  • Studies, evaluates, and, as appropriate, recommends adoption of new secondary level instructional materials, methods, and programs.
  • Assists in reviewing and evaluating results of district-wide testing programs and for developing measures to improve student performance.
  • Provide leadership and assistance in all aspects of the system's Title I program and other federal programs.
  • Assists in the addition of new courses, grade placement of courses, credit allowance for courses, and graduation requirements.
  • Assists in coordinating general curriculum with all curricular areas such as exceptional education, arts education, career technical education, and physical education at the secondary level.
  • Assists in budget preparation for instructional programs as related to instructional supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Assists in the selection, purchase, and distribution of secondary level textbooks for the district.
  • Assists in the development and coordination of the sections of the system budget that pertain to secondary level curriculum and instruction.
  • Assumes a leadership role in developing secondary level curriculum for any secondary level course newly mandated by the Legislature or the Board.
  • Performs such other tasks and responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Board of Education business.
  • Attend board meetings and prepare reports as requested by the Superintendent.
  • Be regular and punctual in attendance.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.
