About The Position

The Coordinator, K-12 Arts provides leadership and coordination with administrators, teachers, and arts partners in implementing a standards-based arts curriculum for all K-12 students in the District. The position supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive arts programs, while advancing district priorities and strengthening instructional practice. This position reports to the Administrator, Arts Education under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, Division of Instruction.

Requirements

  • At least eight (8) years of successful, full-time public school service in a certificated position(s), with no fewer than two (2) years of which must have been in a leadership position(s) (e.g. coordinator, instructional coach, dean)
  • At least five (5) years of successful, full-time public school certificated teaching experience in the arts (dance, music, theater & film, or visual & media arts)
  • A valid California Administrative Services Credential
  • A valid California Teaching Credential authorizing K-12 teaching in the arts (dance, music, theater & film, or visual & media arts) requiring a bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, that included student teaching
  • An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally-accredited college or university
  • Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework

Nice To Haves

  • An undergraduate degree in one or more of the art forms (dance, music, theater & film, and visual & media arts)
  • General knowledge and appreciation for all of the art forms
  • Strong curricular knowledge and experience teaching California visual and performing arts standards
  • Knowledge of standards-based arts instruction including arts resources and teaching methodology; familiarity with approved arts instructional materials/supplies, and available collaborations with arts partners
  • Knowledge of visual and performing arts integration K-12
  • Knowledge of District policies and procedures, goals and objectives, organizational structure and functions, as related to the District’s instructional programs and curriculum
  • Knowledge and understanding of instructional strategies, including SDAIE, that promote access to core content and accelerated achievement of English learners
  • Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
  • Knowledge of the LAUSD implementation plan for the California content standards
  • Experience in designing and delivering arts-based professional development using adult learning theory
  • Experience coordinating large-scale, public-facing events such as arts festivals
  • Demonstrated willingness to take on additional duties and/or leadership roles as assigned
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a collaborative, diverse environment
  • Appropriate interpersonal style and methods to guide individuals toward task accomplishment
  • Leadership skill in adult learning theory and facilitating group processes, including consensus building and conflict resolution
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate a variety of K-12 arts techniques with an emphasis on dance education
  • Ability to work effectively with students with special needs
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, and socioeconomic groups
  • Ability to travel to multiple sites throughout the District

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in the implementation of the Arts Justice: Access & Equity Resolution
  • Develops instructional and in-service materials in the arts (dance, music, theater & film, and visual & media arts) and in arts integration K-12
  • Supervises, evaluates, and supports the itinerant elementary arts teachers, the secondary arts teachers, generalist teachers in arts integration, and collaborations with arts partners in the LAUSD Arts Education Plan
  • Coordinates arts education support and services with the other members of the Division of Instruction
  • Oversees the professional development of District arts teachers and arts integration teachers K-12
  • Develops, implements, and differentiates standards-based instructional programs in all four art forms
  • Coordinates and monitors implementation of the Cultural Arts Passport
  • Prepares reports based on the analysis of gathered statistical and related information
  • Coordinates the work of committees to develop and review instructional publications; evaluates the use of commercial instructional materials for adoption by the District
  • Prepares communications relating to the instructional program in the arts K-12
  • Visits schools to evaluate and provide support to meet the specific needs of students, teacher, and administrators
  • Coordinates approved culminating events, festivals, and other special events related to the arts instructional program for the District
  • Coordinates support of arts festivals and special events
  • Performs other duties as assigned
