About The Position

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The Coordinator for Military Student Experience (Coordinator or CMSE ) serves as an integral member of the Military & Veteran Student Success ( MVSS ) Center staff and the larger Dean of Students ( DOS ) team. The position provides leadership, direction, and support through programmatic and strategic efforts for a comprehensive, holistic, and co-curricular veteran and military-connected student program. Under the leadership of the Program Director for the Carolina Veterans Resource Center, the Coordinator for Military Student Experience will advance the on-going visioning, development, implementation, and assessment of a programmatic agenda centered on student learning, retention, and success – academic, career, and personal – among UNC Chapel Hill’s student-identifying veterans, active duty, Reservist, National Guard, military-connected dependents, and ROTC students. The position provides mentorship and supervision to undergraduate and graduate students, student employees, and interns and may serve as a facilitator for faculty, staff, and student educational seminars and trainings. The Coordinator cultivates positive relationships and is highly collaborative across the university and within the greater military-connected communities in the UNC System, region, and beyond. Additionally, the Coordinator for Military Student Experience also provides highly individualized, holistic care and support for UNC students, specifically those connected to military service, including dependents. They communicate, verbally and in writing, with varied audiences as they triage, respond, and provide on-going support centered around veteran/military centered information and resources, acclimation and transition, and overall student success. This highly collaborative position will be assigned departments, organizations, or constituencies to serve as the primary, initial liaison to triage student concerns. The Coordinator participates in on-going training and education so they may accurately and appropriately advise students regarding Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance, Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Educational Benefits, North Carolina National Guard Tuition Assistance, and the associated UNC processes and procedures; this position is not a school certifying official. This position reports primarily in-person and for the purposes of Title IX and Clery, the Case Manager is a Responsible Employee and a Campus Security Authority.

Requirements

  • Awareness of best practices, theory, issues, and concerns related to the military-connected, veteran and/or active-duty college student population, including but not limited to knowledge of VA benefits, financial aid / student account policies and business procedures/practices.
  • Experience effectively assisting and/or supporting members of the military community, including veterans, those currently serving, and their dependents.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and assessing learning outcomes for educational programs and special events.
  • Proven ability to prioritize work collaboratively, think critically, and adapt to changing priorities as well as work independently on multiple tasks and deal effectively with conflicting priorities.
  • Excellent communicator (written and verbal) with experience delivering information to diverse constituencies in individual, as well as small and large group settings using multiple formats (e.g., in-person, telephone, virtual/video).
  • Experience managing confidential and sensitive information and situations with diplomacy and demonstration of excellent critical thinking and sound judgement; maintaining accurate records with high attention to detail.
  • Candidates must have a willingness to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Proficiency with operating systems, including Windows, as well as Microsoft 365 and Adobe products.
  • Valid NC Driver’s License or eligibility to hold a valid NC Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of full-time professional experience directly related to position responsibilities.
  • Military service alone is not sufficient to meet the experience requirements unless the MOS /Rating was directly related to the position description. Two years in a related internship may equal one professional year.
  • Professional experience working with college students in a highly selective, competitive higher education setting, including knowledge of college student development theory, as well as frameworks and best practices related to veteran and military connected students.
  • Proven experience exercising sound judgement in developing, promoting, implementing, and assessing programs, operations, need-based services, and outreach and education materials, including social media for the student veteran and/or the broader military-connected student population.
  • Direct experience in non-clinical case management in a higher education setting, specifically in a veteran and military student resource center or a Dean of Students office.
  • Experience with the rules and use of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits including GI Bill Chapters 31, 33, and 35, and the Work Study program, as well as Department of Defense tuition assistance and National Guard tuition assistance. (Note: this role does not include School Certifying Official duties.)
  • Experience with the application of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and/or regulations, specifically FERPA , Title IX, HIPPA , Clery, VAWA , and others that are similar and apply to higher education.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and assessing program goals, outcome, effective programs, operations, and needs-based services using data to inform practice and/or policy.
