About The Position

The Salvation Army Family Haven Shelter is seeking an Overnight Monitor for the cooling center. This role involves performing duties to assist, monitor, and maintain order for homeless clients occupying the Cooling/Warming Center. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position, paying $18.00 per hour. It is a temporary seasonal position, running from June 16, 2026, to September 4, 2026, located at 10740 Page Ave, St. Louis, MO.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent diploma with three years of experience working in a social service agency OR five years of work experience without a diploma.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must be a self-starter.
  • Must perform well with minimum supervision.
  • Good communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to work with diverse cultures.
  • Must be able to perform the essential duties.
  • Must be able to provide transportation of clients as needed per the Supervisor.

Nice To Haves

  • Higher education in psychology, social work, criminal justice, or other related field is a plus.
  • Computer skills are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Work various shifts including holidays to maintain 24-hour coverage for the Cooling/Warming Center.
  • Conduct briefings with staff during shift arrivals or departures.
  • Report accurate bed counts and client roster reports to the Supervisor.
  • Monitor clients to maintain order and ensure their safety within the building.
  • Admit homeless persons to the shelter, complete intake, assign beds, and distribute supplies.
  • Screen admissions for weapons and confiscate any identified.
  • Observe occupants' behavior, test for cause for disruptive behavior, and identify those suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Maintain order and contact emergency medical services or police as needed.
  • Utilize crisis intervention skills to address conflicts and provide mediation.
  • Deal with difficult clientele and work with individuals experiencing various mental health issues.
  • Complete shelter daily recordkeeping.
  • Assist with the general cleaning of the building, including laundry responsibilities.
  • Ensure clients are settled for the night and awakened in the morning (awake positions).
  • Advise clients about services provided by The Salvation Army and other organizations.
  • Ensure and monitor the feeding of clients during mealtimes.
  • Document numerical data with accuracy.
  • Assist with volunteer church groups.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by fostering good relationships with co-workers and supervisors through professional conflict resolution, courteous treatment, respect for others, and appropriate communication.
