About The Position

The cook/food service worker is responsible for the food service program, including planning, ordering, preparation, and record keeping. The cook/food service worker also participates in all weekly nutrition activities in classrooms and prepares meals for special events. This role indirectly supervises an assistant cook or other personnel assigned to the food service area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or documentation of pursuit of a GED, or two (2) years of documented experience in the food services field.
  • Possess a Food Handlers Certificate.
  • Knowledge of nutrition, food preparation, quantity cooking, safety, and sanitation.
  • Desire to work with pre-school children, staff, and parents.
  • Must have an annual physical examination including TB skin test or chest x-ray.
  • Applicant must sign paperwork for tribal and state level background checks, confirming no conviction of Child Abuse/Neglect or any violent crimes.
  • Must follow program policies on time and attendance.
  • Must be certified in CPR/1st Aid within 90 days of hire.
  • Maintain current Food handlers certificate.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must make or have travel arrangements for grocery shopping purposes.
  • Must sign confidentiality agreement.
  • Must sign Standards of Conduct agreement.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and budget for food services, complying with Head Start menus and making economical purchases.
  • Prepare breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks, serving well-balanced meals in accordance with USDA regulations and in a sanitary, attractive, family-style manner.
  • Participate in nutrition-related learning activities with children, including eating with them periodically, introducing new foods, and involving them in meal cleanup.
  • Prepare meals for special events, parent meetings, and planned activities, including homemade meal and bakery items.
  • Ensure daily sanitation of the kitchen, including sweeping, mopping, cleaning surfaces, scouring sinks, and sanitizing dishes and utensils.
  • Perform weekly cleaning of stoves, refrigerators, and storage areas, and monthly defrosting of refrigerators and freezers.
  • Maintain clean and orderly cabinets and storage areas, storing food off the floor and protecting it from pests.
  • Store cleaning supplies out of reach of children and dispose of garbage in a sanitary manner.
  • Keep kitchen linens, aprons, and clothes clean and dispose of unused food after serving.
  • Maintain monthly reports, including meal counts, vendor invoices, menu substitutions, label copies, and inventory of supplies.
  • Submit work orders for malfunctioning appliances and other requested documents.
  • Participate in all center staff meetings and attend local parent meetings when requested.
  • Assist in other areas upon supervisor's request after daily kitchen duties are completed.
  • Feed children if they come in early, stay late, or are hungry.
  • Practice good hygiene and manners, wear appropriate attire (hair restraint, proper clothing and footwear, clean apron).
  • Participate in Head Start training for food service personnel.
