About The Position

The cook/food service worker is responsible for the food service program, including planning, ordering, preparation, and record keeping. The role also involves participating in weekly nutrition activities in classrooms and preparing meals for special events. This position indirectly supervises an assistant cook or other personnel assigned to the food service area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED pursuit documentation or two years of documented food service experience may be considered in lieu of minimum education).
  • Possess a Food Handlers Certificate.
  • Desire to work with pre-school children, staff, and parents.
  • Knowledge of nutrition, food preparation, quantity cooking, safety, and sanitation.
  • Must have an annual physical examination including TB skin test or chest x-ray.
  • Applicant must sign paperwork for background checks at tribal and state levels, confirming no conviction of Child Abuse/Neglect or any violent crimes.
  • Must follow program policies on time and attendance.
  • Must be certified in CPR/1st Aid within 90 days of hire.
  • Maintain current Food handlers certificate.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must make or have travel arrangements for grocery shopping purposes.
  • Must sign confidentiality agreement.
  • Must sign Standards of Conduct agreement.
  • Must practice good hygiene and good manners at all times; wear a hair restraint, proper clothing and footwear (no sandals), and a clean apron.
  • Must participate in Head Start training planned for food service personnel.
  • Must feed children if they come in early, stay late or are hungry.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, order, prepare, and maintain records for the food service program.
  • Comply with Head Start menus and post menus, noting any substitutions and reasons for changes.
  • Shop wisely and economically, buying in quantity according to the menu.
  • Utilize new ideas from training and share them with other staff.
  • Prepare breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks, serving well-balanced meals in accordance with USDA regulations.
  • Serve food in a sanitary and attractive manner in a family-style setting.
  • Participate in nutrition-related learning activities, eating with children periodically, introducing new foods, and including children in meal clean-up.
  • Prepare meals for special events, parent meetings, and planned activities.
  • Prepare homemade meal items and bakery items.
  • Serve food at the proper temperature.
  • Maintain kitchen sanitation, including daily sweeping and mopping, wiping counters and tables, scouring and disinfecting sinks, sanitizing dishes and utensils, weekly cleaning of stoves and refrigerators, monthly defrosting of refrigerators and freezers, keeping cabinets and storage areas clean and orderly, storing food properly off the floor, storing cleaning supplies out of reach of children, storing and disposing of garbage in a sanitary manner, keeping kitchen linens clean, and disposing of unused food after serving.
  • Maintain monthly reports and submit them to the Health and Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Complete meal count records and daily attendance of children fed.
  • Maintain inventory of cooking supplies and purchased foods.
  • Submit work orders when appliances are not working or malfunctioning.
  • Participate in all center staff meetings and attend local parent meetings when requested.
  • Assist in other areas upon supervisor's request after daily kitchen duties are completed.
