About The Position

This is a part-time Cook position, also referred to as Food Service Technician II, within the Dept of Veterans Services at Puller Veterans Center. The role involves preparing meals, understanding therapeutic diets, ensuring food safety, and collaborating with a dietary team. The hiring range is $21.00 - $24.00 per hour.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience required
  • ServSafe Certification Required or willing to obtain upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • ServSafe certification is often preferred

Responsibilities

  • Understanding of therapeutic diets (e.g., low sodium, diabetic, pureed, mechanical soft)
  • Basic nutrition principles for older adults and veterans
  • Knowledge of safe food handling procedures
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal food safety regulations
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes and menus
  • Familiarity with batch cooking and portion control
  • Proficiency in preparing meals from scratch using various cooking techniques (e.g., roasting, boiling, sautéing)
  • Ability to adjust recipes for texture-modified diets
  • Ability to coordinate and prepare meals on time for multiple meal periods (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
  • Efficient multitasking in a fast-paced kitchen environment
  • Clear communication with dietary aides, nursing staff, and supervisors
  • Ability to document food temperatures and meal changes accurately
  • Collaborative work with dietary team members to ensure timely and accurate meal delivery
  • Flexibility to adjust menus and meals based on resident needs or supply availability
  • Accuracy in following diet orders and preventing cross-contamination for allergens
