About The Position

The cook is responsible for providing quality food according to the approved menu, following safety, hygiene, and nutrition standards, and working as part of the Food Services Team at Rotary Hospice House. This role involves developing menus, preparing meals, assisting with purchasing and inventory, maintaining kitchen documentation, and fostering a caring environment for residents and families.

Requirements

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year is an asset
  • More than one year of experience in cooking, preferably in health care facilities
  • Current Food Safe Level 1 minimum Certificate
  • WHMIS certificate
  • Direct experience in a palliative Hospice environment
  • Cooking certificate is an asset
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Organization and time management skills
  • Ability to read and implement recipes and work routines
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to operate related equipment
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu designed to meet the needs of up to 10 residents while ensuring that the meals are nutritious and satisfying.
  • Plan and prepare special diets or special event meals in consultation with care professionals and other staff.
  • Prepare and cook lunch and dinner and other sustenance items using safe food handling and preparation procedures and safety and health standards.
  • Assist with the purchasing and ordering of food items and food supplies necessary for the preparation of meals.
  • Ensure that purchases are within approved budget limits and that inventories of food and other related items are maintained.
  • Maintain good relationships with service and food/equipment providers.
  • Report on any equipment maintenance needs.
  • Perform duties that may involve light maintenance (i.e., cleaning of equipment, basic sanitation, etc.).
  • Provide a caring environment for residents and families.
  • Ensure all kitchen documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information.
  • Participate in work-related conferences and seminars to gather knowledge of trends and initiatives.
  • Foster positive relationships with and between families and staff members.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
