About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This role involves preparing, assembling, and cooking baked goods, seasoning, and portioning food for patients/residents, staff, and visitors according to menu and dietary requirements. The cook adheres to food quality standards for appearance, taste, temperature, and sanitation, and performs cleaning duties to ensure a sanitary environment. They are responsible for the proper labeling and storage of food, equipment, and machinery, preparing and serving the highest quality and safest food possible. This position requires strong communication and teamwork skills to work with many internal customers and the ability to thrive in a dynamic culinary environment. The cook follows standardized recipes and HACCP guidelines for food preparation, storage, and use, documenting critical steps and temperatures to ensure food safety. They operate various kitchen equipment and possess an understanding of food safety, sanitation processes, basic math for measurements, and the ability to read and understand recipes. The role requires the ability to be on feet for the majority of the day and walk significant distances within the hospital.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to perform basic math.
  • Minimum of six months of applicable experience preferred.
  • Fulfill annual continuing education requirements of the department and facility including departmental meetings, safety education and mandatory in-services.

  • Serv Safe may be required to obtain within a designated time frame depending upon location of hire.
  • Additional endorsements to Serv Safe may be required depending upon location.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) may be required depending upon location requirements.

  • Valid Driver's License may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, assembles, seasons, and portions food for patients/residents, staff, and visitors.
  • Adheres to food quality standards of appearance, taste, temperature, and sanitation.
  • Performs washing and cleaning duties to ensure sanitation and cleanliness in cooking and serving areas.
  • Maintains labeling and storage of food, equipment, and machinery.
  • Prepares and provides the highest quality and safest food possible.
  • Works with many internal customers, requiring above average communication and excellent teamwork skills.
  • Follows standardized recipes and HACCP guidelines to prepare, store, and use food and food products.
  • Documents HACCP steps, temperatures, and outcomes.
  • Operates equipment such as mixers, slicers, kettles, ovens, stovetops, grills, deep fat fryers, knives, dishwashers, and garbage disposals.
  • Works independently when necessary.
  • Maintains an understanding of food safety and sanitation processes.
  • Uses basic math to measure ingredients and reads and understands recipes.
  • Demonstrates ability to be on feet for the majority of the day and walk far distances throughout the hospital.
