About The Position

This position follows the district’s instructions in food preparation, cooling, and serving food in school cafeterias. The role involves adhering to ethical codes, administrative directives, and school board policies, as well as local, state, and federal regulations. The cook is responsible for maintaining sanitation and safety standards in food handling and preparation, following manager's instructions for food production, portioning, garnishing, and serving. The position also includes participating in the promotion of school and community activities, implementing cost containment measures, and performing other duties as directed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma preferred or currently enrolled in a GED program
  • Must complete each year 4 hours of annual continuing education/training topics as determined by Food and Nutrition Service.
  • Must be food handler certified
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to talk or hear and taste or smell.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance and stool, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Maintains emotional control under stress.

Responsibilities

  • Complies with the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession; upholds and enforces rules, administrative directives, regulations, GISD school board policies, as well as local, state and federal regulations.
  • Attends job-related training classes and workshops.
  • Practices procedures in food preparation, use and care of equipment and personal habits to assure that sanitation standards are met.
  • Follows standards of safety in preparing, storing, and serving food.
  • Follows the manager's instructions in producing and serving food.
  • Follows manager's instructions in portioning, garnishing, and serving meals.
  • Participates in implementing promotion of special school and community activities consistent with board policy.
  • Follows procedures in personnel matters.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with the school community.
  • Participates in implementing cost containment measures while maintaining quality.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
