About The Position

The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving all food items and meals in accordance with planned menus and recipes, ensuring high quality, palatable, and appetizing food. This role also involves assisting with food preparation for special events, managing special diet requests, making authorized food substitutions, and adhering to sanitary regulations and company policies. The Cook plays a key role in maintaining kitchen organization, inventory, and ensuring a safe and positive environment for residents and staff.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a cook in an institutional setting.
  • Criminal record clearance.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Serv Safe Manager’s Certificate.
  • Obtain and maintain a Food Handler’s permit.

  • High school diploma is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve all food items and meals in accordance with planned menus and recipes, ensuring high quality, palatable, and appetizing food.
  • Assist in food preparation for special meals, parties, and events.
  • Inspect special diet requests and orders to ensure correct diets are served.
  • Prepare and serve substitute foods to residents who refuse served foods.
  • Make only authorized food substitutions and consult with the Culinary Services Director on menu changes.
  • Prepare food and serve in accordance with sanitary regulations, established policies, and procedures.
  • Report any incidents or infractions to the Culinary Services Director.
  • Ensure food storage areas are clean and properly arranged.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Serv Safe Manager’s Certificate and Food Handler’s permit.
  • Assist in the purchasing of food and supplies when requested.
  • Ensure stock levels of staple/non-staple food, supplies, and equipment are maintained at adequate levels.
  • Work closely with the Culinary Services Director in specifying and selecting food products.
  • Dispose of food and waste in accordance with established policies.
  • Properly label, date, and store all food leftovers.
  • Check in all purchases in the absence of the Culinary Services Director.
  • Assist in inventory and storing in-coming food and supplies as necessary.
  • Assist in serving meals as necessary on a timely basis.
  • Open or close the kitchen as dictated by department scheduling.
  • Record temperatures of coolers and freezers as required by company policy.
  • In the absence of the Culinary Services Director, ensure all staff arrive and/or depart at scheduled times.
  • Responsible for all cleaning items assigned to this position, as posted on daily/weekly checklists and those assigned by the Culinary Services Director.
  • Ensure that the next day’s items are in stock and pulled and thawing under refrigeration as dictated by the menus.
  • Prepare soups, appetizers, entrees, vegetables, side dishes, and desserts for regular and special diets, as well as meals for staff and special events.
  • Plan the timing of food production to coordinate with meal serving hours to preserve quality, temperature, and appearance.
  • Maintain control over meal portions and food consistency.
  • Estimate food requirements and control serving portions to eliminate waste and leftovers.
  • Responsible for the safe storage and efficient use of all items within the kitchen’s inventory.
  • Responsible for the set-up of carts to be delivered to resident dining areas, if applicable.
  • Display tact and friendliness when dealing with residents, families, and visitors.
  • Provide support to community’s marketing efforts through positive/friendly interaction during property tours and telephone contact.
  • Communicate any observed or suspected resident change of condition to a supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for all staff, residents, and guests, following established safety standards.
  • Encourage teamwork through cooperative interactions with co-workers and other departments.
  • Support a positive and professional image through actions and dress.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Culinary Services Director.
