About The Position

The Cook supports children, adolescents, and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, trauma-informed care in a therapeutic, supportive, and person-centered environment by preparing and serving nutritious meals that meet individual dietary needs and comply with health and safety regulations. The Cook collaborates with residential, educational, and clinical staff to support a consistent and structured daily routine through meal service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly in a kitchen setting.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure or during periods of high activity.
  • Ability to build respectful and supportive interactions with youth and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold agency policies and ethical standards.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass all background and health clearances as required by agency policy.
  • Ability to complete and maintain relevant certifications (e.g., First Aid/CPR, crisis intervention).

Nice To Haves

  • One year of cooking experience in an institutional, residential, or school-based setting preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook meals in accordance with planned menus, special dietary needs, and portion control standards.
  • Ensure all food is stored, prepared, and served in a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness and comply with state and local health department regulations.
  • Assist in meal planning and inventory management, including receiving, inspecting, and storing food and supplies.
  • Monitor and record food temperatures, refrigerator/freezer logs, and cleaning schedules as required.
  • Follow proper food safety and allergen protocols at all times.
  • Maintain positive relationships with staff and youth, ensuring meals contribute to a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Communicate effectively with staff regarding dietary restrictions, menu modifications, and individual needs.
  • Participate in relevant training and staff meetings.
  • Maintain active certification in agency-approved crisis intervention training, including all required levels of Physical and Psychological Management Training (PMT). Apply training techniques appropriately to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals served, staff, and others in the environment. Demonstrate competency in de-escalation strategies, safe physical interventions, and adherence to agency protocols.
