Corrections professionals foster a humane and secure environment and support public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into the community. The Cook Supervisor’s primary responsibility is to supervise and instruct 25–30 inmate workers assigned to food-service duties, including cooking, butchering, baking, dining and dish work, vegetable preparation, and washing pots and pans. The supervisor provides ongoing training to update workers’ knowledge of food production, presentation, and sanitation. The position oversees the receipt, storage, and issuance of food and non-food items. It also involves security duties, including key, yeast, knife, and blade control; inmate accountability; and routine contraband searches in the work area. Like other correctional institution employees, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining institutional security, and correctional duties take precedence over other responsibilities and are performed regularly. The role requires the ability to independently prepare a full range of foods and meals, follow standardized recipes, plan or coordinate meal preparation, and adjust recipes and preparation methods. The position also requires knowledge of large-quantity cooking and special or modified diets. Applicants must hold an approved Food Protection Manager Certification from an ANSI-accredited provider, with proof uploaded when applying, unless they are current BOP Cook Supervisors in the WS-7404 position. Appointment is subject to screening and investigation requirements, and successful completion of a three-week Introduction to Correctional Techniques course in Glynco, Georgia is required.
