About The Position

This position is responsible for preparing meals for crew members, performing seaman/deckhand duties, and general maintenance as directed. The role involves working in various indoor and outdoor conditions, including different weather and sea conditions, and potentially noisy and dusty environments. Occasional use of paints, solvents, and thinners is expected. The Cook/AB will use galley appliances and basic hand and power tools, and may drive a company van to deliver stores to the vessel. Work hours are based on vessel assignment and sailing schedules, and can include Monday through Sunday.

Requirements

  • US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document with Able Bodied Seaman Special, Limited or Unlimited endorsement required.
  • Steward's department (FH) endorsement required.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Current TB clearance.
  • High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Sufficient verbal, reading and writing skills as necessitated by the job (i.e., coordinating tasks with co-workers, receiving instructions from supervisors, reading instructions/directions, writing lists/statements/reports).
  • Sufficient mathematical ability to maintain budget.
  • Attentiveness to detail and alertness at all times to ensure safety of vessel and crew.
  • Ability to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers and supervisory personnel.
  • Ability to operate and utilize basic hand and hand held power tools.
  • 20/20 correctable vision in each eye and color sense as required by US Coast Guard. Depth perception and a wide field of vision required to ensure safety of vessel and crew when docking.

Nice To Haves

  • STCW 95 endorsement, preferred.
  • Completion of culinary schooling with two (2) years meal preparation experience, preferred.
  • Three (3) years underway galley experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare meals for crew members.
  • Prepare store lists and review with the Captain. Shop for stores.
  • Maintain a monthly budget and ensure it is not exceeded.
  • Perform general maintenance in the galley and on the vessel, including needle gunning and painting.
  • Perform sanitary duties in the galley.
  • Perform seaman/deckhand duties such as handling lines, tow wires, setting blocks, lifting and securing bridles.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer/Engineer in the engine room.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
