About The Position

A Convention Services Manager (CSM) provides a wide range of event planning and logistics, event management, client and patron relations, and other related skills in support of events contracted at the Baltimore Convention Center (The Center). One of several members of the Convention Services team, a CSM, works with minimal supervision from an administrative superior and is expected to resolve problems by reference to general work instructions or occupational practices, procedures, and precedents. The results of their efforts ensure the BCC provides a positive experience for Center clients and associated visitors. This position partners closely with the Center’s service providers such as Telecommunications, Audio/Visual, Catering, and Utilities as well as event management from Visit Baltimore. All actions of the CSM must be in accordance with the policies and procedures of the BCC and the City of Baltimore. The CSM is a part of the Sales, Services, and Marketing department and reports directly to the Assistant Director of Convention Services.

Requirements

  • Education: Have a bachelor's degree in business, public relations, hospitality, marketing or related field from an accredited college or university. Commensurate experience will be considered in-lieu of degree AND
  • Experience: Have three years of experience in public relations, business, hospitality, marketing, or related field work at the intermediate level.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and methods of event planning and logistics.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with clients and co-workers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively between different audiences.
  • Effective and diplomatic interpersonal skills in high pressure situations.
  • Ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Superior organizational skills as well as the ability to maintain records and files.
  • Knowledge of universal meetings, exhibit, convention and other hospitality methodology, practices, and operating procedures.
  • Ability to translate specifications into working documents for the departmental staff of the Center in accordance with client’s specifications.
  • Ability to evaluate details and detect gaps in information.
  • Ability to understand, identify, and articulate the cause-and-effect of decisions made by self and by others.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and explain contract language

Nice To Haves

  • Possesses professional event-based certification(s) (CASE, CEM, CMP, CVP, etc.) and is actively engaged with industry professional organizations (ASAE, IAEE, IAVM, MPI, PCMA, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and ensures contractual responsibilities of all parties.
  • Works directly with clients and show staff how to plan logistics of their events
  • Prepares event documents and staff instructions for the building staff.
  • Insures event and client compliance with building regulations.
  • Manages and directs staff during events and resolves event related problems.
  • Manages all operations during events
  • Coordinates all work between partnering service contractor
  • Calculates and approves billing statements.
  • Performs related work as required.
