Controls Technician III (Engineering)
About The Position
This role is responsible for troubleshooting and repairing PLC-controlled manufacturing equipment. The technician will program, modify, and maintain PLC logic, configure and troubleshoot HMIs and SCADA systems, and install, calibrate, and maintain industrial instrumentation. The position also involves troubleshooting servo systems, motion control, robotics, and VFDs, diagnosing various system failures, and interpreting electrical schematics and diagrams. The technician will perform preventative and predictive maintenance, support equipment startups and changeovers, configure industrial communication networks, and manage system backups and documentation. Additionally, the role involves assisting engineers with installations and upgrades, recommending continuous improvements, mentoring junior technicians, coordinating with various departments and vendors, ensuring safety compliance, maintaining maintenance records, and participating in on-call support.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- 5–8 years of industrial controls or automation experience.
- Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems up to 480 VAC.
- Experience troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and industrial automation equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and technical documentation.
- Experience using electrical test equipment including multimeters, oscilloscopes, and process calibrators.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders and work from elevated platforms.
- Ability to work in confined spaces when necessary.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to distinguish wire colors and read detailed electrical drawings.
- Must be able to work in industrial environments with varying temperatures, noise levels, and moving machinery.
- Exposure to electrical equipment, rotating machinery, compressed air systems, and production processes.
- Appropriate PPE is required.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, FactoryTalk View, Siemens TIA Portal, or similar platforms.
- Exposure to CNC motion control (Omron-Delta Tau, Siemens).
- Knowledge of robotics (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa, or Universal Robots).
- Experience with industrial networking and cybersecurity best practices.
- Experience supporting SCADA and MES systems.
- OSHA safety training or NFPA 70E certification.
- ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) certification.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair PLC-controlled manufacturing equipment.
- Program, modify, and maintain PLC logic using platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, or Omron.
- Configure and troubleshoot HMIs and SCADA systems.
- Install, calibrate, and maintain industrial instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, and level devices.
- Troubleshoot servo systems, motion control, robotics, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Diagnose electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and controls-related failures.
- Interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and control drawings.
- Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on automation systems.
- Support equipment startups, commissioning, and production changeovers.
- Configure industrial communication networks including Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet, DeviceNet, and other fieldbus systems.
- Perform system backups, software version control, and documentation updates.
- Assist engineers with new equipment installations and automation upgrades.
- Recommend and implement continuous improvement projects that increase equipment reliability and productivity.
- Mentor Controls Technicians I and II on troubleshooting techniques and best practices.
- Coordinate with maintenance, engineering, operations, and outside vendors to resolve equipment issues.
- Ensure compliance with electrical codes, company standards, and safety regulations including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO).
- Maintain accurate maintenance records using a CMMS.
- Participate in on-call support and respond to emergency equipment failures as required.
