About The Position

ATC is seeking a Controls Hardware Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of engineered-to-order automation equipment. ATC Automation specializes in designing and building custom automated assembly and test systems for a range of industries, including transportation, life sciences, and consumer products. In this role, you will develop detailed electrical and pneumatic schematics based on automation requirements, industry standards, and customer specifications. You will be part of a collaborative and fast-paced team environment focused on delivering high-quality projects on time and within budget while maintaining strong customer satisfaction. This is a full-time, direct-hire position offering a comprehensive benefits package and opportunities for professional growth within the broader organization. The position is based at our headquarters in Cookeville, TN, and reports to the Director of the Life Science Division. Collaboration with Business Unit Managers will also be required to support successful project execution.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable electrical standards, including NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, UL 508A, IEC 60204-1, and the EU Machinery Directive (CE).
  • Familiarity with safety standards such as ISO 13849 for Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems.
  • Experience with electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, ePLAN, or SolidWorks Electrical.
  • Experience designing and sizing pneumatic systems, including valves, filters, regulators, and surge tanks.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, and robotics sufficient to inform design decisions.
  • Experience sizing industrial power systems (600V or less), including transformers, disconnects, and overcurrent protection.
  • Hands-on experience in industrial automation environments.
  • Knowledge of industrial control power systems (24VDC, Class 2 circuits, electronic circuit protection).
  • Familiarity with major suppliers such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Keyence, IFM, SMC, and Festo.
  • Experience integrating third-party equipment (e.g., vision systems, motion control/servo systems, robotics) into electrical designs.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
  • 4+ years of relevant professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop complete electrical design packages, including detailed electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics, cable routing diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials, and material requisitions.
  • Perform engineering calculations such as full-load amperage, short-circuit current ratings, and panel temperature analysis.
  • Implement automation tools (macros, scripting, etc.) to improve design efficiency.
  • Drive standardization of schematics across the division.
  • Collaborate with Design and Build teams to ensure alignment throughout project execution.
  • Partner with vendors to obtain technical documentation and support.
  • Create and interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Apply strong computer skills and controls knowledge to support machine design.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external customers across disciplines.
  • Apply electrical and controls engineering principles to support system design.
  • Assist Applications Engineering (quoting) with scope definition as needed.
