About The Position

Radiac Abrasives, Inc., a leading manufacturer of conventional bonded and super abrasives, is seeking a Controls Engineer to join their Salem team. This role is crucial for designing, developing, and maintaining automated control systems to enhance manufacturing process performance and efficiency. The Controls Engineer will be instrumental in ensuring seamless equipment operation, optimizing production workflows, and supporting Radiac's commitment to quality and innovation within the engineering team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in designing, programming, and troubleshooting automated control systems, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Honeywell, or similar platforms).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, or Ethernet/IP.
  • Strong understanding of motor controls, instrumentation, and electrical systems in industrial settings.
  • Familiarity with safety and compliance standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO 9001).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to troubleshooting.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • 20/20 vision required with or without correction.
  • Ability to use hands 100% of the workday.
  • Ability to stand and or walk 100% of the workday.
  • Ability to bend, stoop or twist 50% of the workday.
  • Ability to exert physical force to push, pull, lift or carry 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work in shop environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the abrasives, ceramics, or related manufacturing industries.
  • Knowledge of robotic systems, motion controls, or servo systems.
  • Familiarity with Industry 4.0 and IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) technologies.
  • CAD proficiency for designing control panels and layouts.
  • Project management experience or certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement automated control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, and other control devices to support production processes.
  • Write, test, and debug PLC and HMI/SCADA programs, ensuring compatibility and seamless integration with existing systems.
  • Evaluate manufacturing and operational processes to identify opportunities for automation, optimization, and efficiency improvements.
  • Diagnose and resolve control system issues, minimizing downtime and ensuring reliable equipment performance.
  • Conduct system simulations, FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests), and SATs (Site Acceptance Tests) to ensure proper functionality and performance.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and user manuals for all control systems.
  • Collaborate with production and engineering teams to analyze processes and identify opportunities to enhance system efficiency and product quality.
  • Ensure control systems comply with applicable safety standards, industry regulations, and company policies.
  • Stay updated with the latest technologies and trends in automation and control systems, recommending innovative solutions to improve processes.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including maintenance, production, and quality assurance, to support company goals.
