Controls & Embedded Systems Engineer - Prototype Development

American TurbinesSan Francisco, CA
$175,000 - $225,000

About The Position

American Turbines is designing small modular gas turbines for distributed power generation. The Controls & Embedded Systems Engineer will be responsible for the embedded controls and firmware required to operate the company's first turbine, from startup to steady-state operation, ensuring safe and reliable performance during testing and shutdown. This role involves owning the P&ID, sensor selection, and valve and plumbing choices, and working closely with the test team to implement control logic and firmware. The engineer will be integrated into the hardware build process from the early stages, influencing component selection based on controllability and observability. This is a hands-on role focused on making the engine run, not just simulating or documenting.

Requirements

  • Experience with embedded controls and firmware for rotating machinery, engines, or similarly real-time, safety-critical systems.
  • Proven experience taking a system from a blank sheet to actual operation (not just simulation or specification).
  • Strong understanding of failure modes and control loops.
  • Ability to make judgment calls under uncertainty.
  • Preference for hands-on work and observing system operation over extensive documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Own the embedded controls and firmware for the first turbine, from startup to steady-state operation.
  • Ensure the turbine runs safely and reliably through all testing phases and during shutdown.
  • Own P&ID, sensor selection, and valve and plumbing choices.
  • Work directly with the test team to integrate sensors and define control logic and firmware.
  • Close the loop on control logic and firmware based on testing feedback and engine needs.
  • Be embedded in the hardware build process from early stages.
  • Shape component choices around controllability and observability.
