About The Position

The Controls Designer is responsible for designing and drafting electrical equipment, wiring, control equipment, and data acquisition systems used in wind tunnel and hypersonic ground test projects. This diverse role works closely with engineering to release predominantly custom, one-off equipment and components for new tunnel facilities and major capability upgrades to existing facilities. The role includes designing electrical, controls, and facility-integrated systems; organizing CAD drawings and bills of material according to the company configuration management plan and established procedures; researching and specifying hardware; managing release communications; and supporting procurement, production, installation, testing, and commissioning. The designer performs work to schedule and budget while meeting quality standards, industry codes, and customer requirements, and estimates labor and schedules for assigned tasks. Approximately 10% of the role involves remote site field installation, checkout, testing, and customer service, including updating drawings from field redline markups to create as-built documentation. Domestic and international travel is possible and typically is less than 15%.

  • US Person status, due to security requirements.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally; travel typically is less than 15%.
  • Ability to balance priorities across multiple projects simultaneously as a self-starter.
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual contributor and collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Experience with P&ID (Piping & Instrumentation Diagram) drawings.
  • Electromechanical systems and PLC control integration experience.
  • Strong AutoCAD Electrical or similar ECAD software skills, such as EPLAN Electric P8, and 2D wiring diagram experience.
  • Proficiency reviewing 3D CAD models.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with engineers to design electrical, controls, and facility-integrated systems.
  • Organize CAD drawings—including junction boxes and other larger assemblies, panel layouts, schematics, and cable assemblies—and bills of material in accordance with the company configuration management plan and established procedures.
  • Research, select, and specify hardware based on design requirements; coordinate with vendors and suppliers on component specifications, lead times, and sourcing.
  • Clearly communicate and manage the release of bills of material and drawings outside of engineering.
  • Communicate changes resulting from drawing and bill-of-material revisions to downstream departments and customers.
  • Interface with procurement, production, and installation teams to resolve issues and concerns identified during equipment assembly, testing, and commissioning.
  • Perform design duties on schedule and within budget while adhering to quality standards, industry codes, and customer requirements.
