About The Position

Ventura MedStaff is a growing, multi-state organization with annual revenues of approximately $50–100 million, operating in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment. Our leadership team is focused on sustainable growth, strong financial controls, and data-driven decision-making. We are seeking a strategic, hands-on Controller to lead our financial operations and partner closely with executive leadership to drive profitability, compliance, and long-term success. The Controller is responsible for overseeing financial operations of the organization, including accounting, taxes, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, audits, payroll and risk management. This role will lead the Finance function, establish strong internal controls, and provide strategic financial insight to ownership and executive leadership. This is a highly visible leadership role requiring both strategic vision and operational execution in a multi-entity, multi-state environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in finance or accounting
  • Prior leadership experience managing finance teams required

Responsibilities

  • Financial Leadership & Strategy Lead the planning, development, implementation, and ongoing management of the company’s financial operations.
  • Partner with ownership and executive leadership to support profitable growth and strategic initiatives.
  • Define and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial objectives, report results to leadership.
  • Analyze company performance, risks, and opportunities; provide actionable financial insights and forecasts.
  • Recommend benchmarks and best practices to measure and improve financial performance.
  • Provide ROI analysis for major initiatives, vendors, and investments.
  • Accounting, Controls & Compliance Maintain a documented system of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to minimize financial risk.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, SOX, all 50 multi state tax laws, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Oversee all audit activities and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Oversee junior accountants, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable positions including full oversight of company collections.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee filings and required financial reporting as applicable.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting.
  • Monitor budget performance and report significant variances to leadership.
  • Support capital investment analysis, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Payroll Management & Administration Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, multi-state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Oversight of multi-state sales and payroll tax compliance.
  • Team Leadership Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance team to meet departmental and organizational goals.
  • Set performance expectations, conduct reviews, and support professional development.
  • Oversee daily operations, including workflow planning and process improvements.
  • Interview, hire, and onboard new team members as needed.
  • Ensure strong communication and collaboration across departments.
  • Supervisory Duties: Lead, supervise, and motivate employees to achieve departmental goals.
  • Set performance expectations, conduct performance reviews, and support employee development.
  • Oversee daily operations, including reviewing and approving timecards, time-off requests, and work schedules.
  • Interview, hire, and train new team members to ensure a skilled and effective workforce.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and leadership, providing updates and feedback.
  • Resolve issues or challenges and implement process improvements.
  • Monitor employee performance, maintain accurate documentation, and ensure compliance with company policies.
