About The Position

Institutional Overview Nestled in 25 acres of beautiful gardens, Philbrook Museum of Art is a 1920s Italianate Villa featuring a dynamic and ambitious program of rotating exhibitions and galleries with selections from an actively growing collection of approximately 15,000 objects. With artworks from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe dating from 3,000 BCE to today, Philbrook is Oklahoma’s most comprehensive art museum and offers visitors a glimpse into a broad range of cultures, time periods, and perspectives. Position Overview The Controller is responsible for overseeing key accounting operations that support the financial stewardship of Philbrook. This role ensures audit readiness, maintains accurate financial reporting, and supports the organization’s budgeting and financial planning processes. The Controller works closely with the CFO and business office team to strengthen internal controls, improve processes, and provide clear financial insights to staff and board leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Accounting from a four-year accredited college or university
  • 7-10 years of progressively responsible fund accounting experience, preferably in non-profit accounting environments
  • Demonstrated experience managing or coordinating the annula financial audit as primary job responsibility.
  • Skilled at preparing financial reports, interpreting data, and providing recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit fund accounting and financial reporting standards
  • Ability to translate financial data into actionable insights for non-financial audiences
  • Strategic thinker with exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Motivated to drive process improvements and make a visible impact on the organization
  • Advanced computer skills in Excel and MS Office
  • Strong collaborative and relationship management skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Sage Intacct
  • Active Certified Public Account (CPA) license

Responsibilities

  • Maintain audit readiness and coordinate preparation for the annual financial audit and required tax schedules
  • Serve as a liaison with external auditors ensuring audit schedules and supporting documentation are timely and accurate
  • Ensure accounting practices comply with applicable accounting standards and nonprofit fund accounting requirements
  • Prepare and review accounting entries related to investment activities
  • Perform and oversee monthly bank reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Review monthly journal entries for accuracy and compliance with accounting policies
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and accounting documentation.
  • Build and maintain financial reports within Sage Intacct to support management and board reporting needs
  • Prepare financial analysis, as requested, for management review
  • Occasionally present financial information at board committee and all-staff meetings.
  • Assist the CFO in developing and maintaining Philbrook’s budgeting process
  • Provide financial insights to improve planning and decision making.
  • Meet regularly with Philbrook project owners to review performance, assess over-/under-performance against budgets, and help ensure overall net performance goals are achieved.
  • Support and lead initiatives to enhance financial processes, reporting efficiency, and internal controls.
  • Evaluate business processes and make recommendations to improve operational effectiveness.
