About The Position

A privately owned commercial construction company on Long Island is seeking a Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations. This is a high-impact, hands-on leadership role overseeing everything from cash flow and payroll to job costing across a fast-moving portfolio of active projects. This company operates with 25–40 projects at any given time, ranging from $1M–$10M, with timelines spanning a few weeks to 2–6 months. You’ll partner closely with leadership and Project Managers to ensure financial accuracy, profitability, and strong business performance.

Requirements

  • 8–10+ years of accounting experience, ideally in construction or project-based environments
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required)
  • Strong foundation in GL, financial reporting, and analysis
  • Expertise in cash flow management, forecasting, and bank reconciliations
  • Experience with in-house payroll (highly preferred)
  • Exposure to job costing/WIP (strong plus)
  • Audit support and tax prep experience
  • Ability to oversee AP/AR and payroll teams effectively
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with Foundation a plus

Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily cash flow, receivables, and collections
  • Oversee bank reconciliations and manage a $5M–$12M line of credit
  • Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts aligned with project and payroll cycles
  • Oversee weekly in-house payroll for ~200 employees (scaling to ~600 W2s annually)
  • Manage full payroll cycle including tax filings, union requirements, compliance, and year-end reporting
  • Supervise payroll team and ensure accurate, timely processing
  • Analyze financials across 25–40 active projects on an ongoing basis
  • Review job cost reports, including under/overbilling, cost overruns, and margin erosion
  • Partner with Project Managers to maintain accurate job profitability
  • Track WIP and ensure proper revenue recognition
  • Prepare financial data for tax filings
  • Lead annual audit process and coordinate with external CPA firm
  • Support insurance reporting and compliance requirements
  • Manage and mentor accounting team (AP, AR, Payroll)
  • Maintain efficient workflows and clear ownership across accounting functions
  • Oversee benefits administration (FSA, 401k, etc.)
  • Support onboarding and payroll-related HR functions
