About The Position

The Controller will be responsible for recruiting and retaining exceptional accounting associates, determining department efficiencies, and managing the appropriate size of the accounting team. This role involves developing and mentoring staff with a focus on internal promotion, identifying and resolving performance issues, and establishing effective interdepartmental communication protocols. The Controller will also provide proactive and responsive communication to clients and associates, establish and communicate expectations and goals, and identify job duties, work schedules, and training needs for the accounting team. This position reports to the Director of Investment Accounting and/or department leadership. Key responsibilities include the development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting information, maintaining the company’s system of accounts, and providing effective financial controls. The role also involves managing and coordinating external and internal audits, retail reporting, and ensuring the accurate and timely preparation of monthly financial statements, EOM procedures, A/P and A/R reconciliations, and month-end close processes. Additionally, the Controller will manage cash management, act as a liaison with clients regarding cash status, and handle special projects and other assigned duties. Recommendations and modifications regarding office performance and business needs will also be part of the role.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S. degree in Accounting/Finance required.
  • Two or more years of previous work experience in accounting leadership role
  • Prior experience managing, mentoring, and development of people
  • Previous experience with Alliance or within industry in a leadership accounting role
  • Proficiency and command of Microsoft suite software i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and accounting strategist
  • High degree of responsibility and initiative
  • Knowledge in generally accepted accounting principals
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and adaption to change
  • Independent and autonomous work style
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and relate effectively, productively and positively with other associates and clients
  • Computer literacy in: Yardi, Microsoft office environment (excel, word, PowerPoint) with web based communications and proficiency in typical budget programs
  • Ability to have flexibility with working schedule based on business and deadline needs.
  • Ability to work a schedule during normal work hours and that may be other than Monday-Friday, 8-5.
  • Consistent, regular and in person attendance during regular working hours at the workplace is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field a plus but not required
  • CPA designation a plus

Responsibilities

  • Develop and mentor bench strength with focus on promoting from within when possible.
  • Promptly identify weak links and coach or counsel to resolution.
  • Establish interdepartmental communication protocol and assist personnel in effective communication with associates and other personnel within the Company.
  • Proactively promote open communication between all stakeholders internal and external and actively follow-up on all matters pertaining to Alliance business functions as needed.
  • Provide friendly, responsive and proactive communication to clients and associates.
  • Establish and communicate expectations and goals on an on-going basis.
  • Identify job duties, work schedules, and appropriate department staffing to include ongoing training needs among accounting team.
  • Communicate personnel issues to the Director of Investment Accounting and/or department leadership as needed.
  • Recognize and reward associates.
  • Development, analysis and interpretation of statistical and accounting information to appraise operating results.
  • Maintain the company’s system of accounts, books and records on all company transactions and assets.
  • Provide effective financial controls at the asset and any specialized accounting requirements at the asset.
  • Manage and coordinate external and internal audits.
  • Manage and coordinate retail reporting as needed.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly financial statements and EOM procedures.
  • Ensure accurate preparation and reconciliation of A/P and A/R.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation and forwarding of resident legal notices to include forwarding of resident files for legal action and collections.
  • Ensure accurate month end close processes.
  • Cash Management and company liaison with clients regarding cash status.
  • Coordinate and manage external auditors.
  • Special projects, research and other duties as assigned.
  • Make recommendations and modifications regarding office performance, business needs, etc.
  • Any other tasks assigned or directed.
