About The Position

The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day management and integrity of the organization’s accounting operations, including financial close, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit coordination. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both direct execution and team development. The Controller will manage an accounting team, ensure accurate and timely financial statements, and maintain strong internal controls and cash management practices. Working closely with the CFO, this role will also support budgeting, regulatory reporting (including Medicare CAP and cost reports), and help modernize finance and accounting processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience required.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • Strong accounting foundation with experience managing financial close and financial statement preparation.
  • Knowledge of banking and cash management practices.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Experience coordinating or supporting financial statement audits.
  • Familiarity with accounting systems (Sage Intacct preferred) and payroll processes.
  • Strong verbal, written, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and develop staff in a collaborative environment.
  • Willingness to be hands-on and work at both detailed and supervisory levels.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to collaborate and partner with members of other departments.
  • Capable of understanding, developing and managing complex business processes that support productivity and adherence to internal controls.
  • Solid critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive, self-directed approach and sound independent judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Medicare or other regulatory reporting a plus.
  • Knowledge of payroll processing a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute the monthly financial close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee all core accounting functions, including accounts payable, payroll, cash, and accruals.
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Supervise, support, and develop accounting and payroll staff, providing coaching, training, and daily oversight.
  • Serve as a hands-on resource to the team, stepping into detailed accounting work as needed.
  • Partner with the Revenue Cycle Manager to ensure alignment between billing activity and financial reporting.
  • Support CFO in creating monthly & ad hoc financial reporting, budgets, forecasts, and other analysis as needed.
  • Lead the annual financial audit, including preparation of schedules, coordinating requests, and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to ensure accuracy, compliance, and protection of organizational assets.
  • Ensure accounting practices are consistent with GAAP and nonprofit standards.
  • Oversee daily cash management, including monitoring balances, forecasting short-term cash needs, and managing banking activity.
  • Review and approve disbursements and ensure appropriate cash controls are in place.
  • Support and, over time, lead the preparation of regulatory reporting, including Medicare CAP calculations and cost reports (training provided by CFO).
  • Assist with external reporting requirements and ensure accuracy and completeness of submissions.
  • Review financial statements and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain clear audit trails and documentation to support all financial activity.
  • Assist in producing internal reports and analysis to support organizational decision-making.
