About The Position

The Controller will be responsible for recruiting and retaining exceptional accounting associates, determining department efficiencies, and establishing the appropriate size of the accounting team. This role involves developing and mentoring staff with a focus on internal promotion, identifying and addressing performance issues, and establishing effective interdepartmental communication protocols. The Controller will proactively promote open communication with all stakeholders, provide responsive client and associate communication, and establish clear expectations and goals. Key responsibilities include identifying job duties, work schedules, and staffing needs, including ongoing training. The role also involves the development, analysis, and interpretation of statistical and accounting information to assess operating results, maintaining the company's accounting systems, and ensuring effective financial controls. The Controller will manage and coordinate external and internal audits, retail reporting, and ensure the accurate and timely preparation of monthly financial statements, EOM procedures, A/P and A/R reconciliations, and resident legal notices. Cash management, client liaison regarding cash status, and coordination with external auditors are also critical. Special projects, research, and other assigned duties, including making recommendations for office performance and business needs, are part of the role.

Requirements

  • B.A./B.S. degree in Accounting/Finance required
  • Two or more years of previous work experience in accounting leadership role
  • Prior experience managing, mentoring, and development of people
  • Previous experience with Alliance or within industry in a leadership accounting role
  • Proficiency and command of Microsoft suite software i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and accounting strategist
  • High degree of responsibility and initiative
  • Knowledge in generally accepted accounting principals
  • High tolerance for ambiguity and adaption to change
  • Independent and autonomous work style
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and relate effectively, productively and positively with other associates and clients
  • Computer literacy in: Yardi, Microsoft office environment (excel, word, PowerPoint) with web based communications and proficiency in typical budget programs
  • Ability to have flexibility with working schedule based on business and deadline needs
  • Consistent, regular and in person attendance during regular working hours at the workplace is required

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field a plus but not required
  • CPA designation a plus

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and retain exceptional accounting associates

  • Communicate personnel issues to the Director of Investment Accounting and/or department leadership as needed

  • Development, analysis and interpretation of statistical and accounting information to appraise operating results
  • Maintain the company’s system of accounts, books and records on all company transactions and assets
  • Provide effective financial controls at the asset and any specialized accounting requirements at the asset
  • Manage and coordinate external and internal audits
  • Manage and coordinate retail reporting as needed
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly financial statements and EOM procedures
  • Ensure accurate preparation and reconciliation of A/P and A/R
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation and forwarding of resident legal notices to include forwarding of resident files for legal action and collections
  • Ensure accurate month end close processes
  • Cash Management and company liaison with clients regarding cash status
  • Coordinate and manage external auditors
  • Special projects, research and other duties as assigned
  • Make recommendations and modifications regarding office performance, business needs, etc.
  • Any other tasks assigned or directed
