About The Position

SkillsetGroup is seeking a Controller – Construction Industry to work in the city of Phoenix, AZ area. The ideal candidate will lead accounting and financial operations for a high-performing construction division. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for financial reporting, compliance, budgeting, and overseeing the full accounting function while partnering closely with operations and executive leadership. This will be a 1st shift (WITH flexibility) position and a Direct Hire opportunity.

Requirements

8+ years of accounting experience, with construction accounting strongly preferred
Prior supervisory or management experience required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and job costing principles
Advanced Excel skills
Experience with accounting systems (Sage or similar preferred)
Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment

Responsibilities

Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting
Oversee all accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll entries, job costing, and account reconciliations
Manage budgets, forecasts, and financial analysis to support operational performance and decision-making
Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, audits, and construction-specific reporting requirements
Supervise and develop accounting staff while maintaining strong internal controls
Review and manage WIP reporting, revenue recognition, and cost allocation across multiple projects
Support contract review, billing disputes, collections, and insurance/bonding processes
Partner with leadership to identify financial risks, analyze variances, and drive process improvements
Oversee compliance programs including certified payroll, 401(k), and regulatory filings
