About The Position

The successful candidate for the Controller position will report to the CEO. They will be responsible for supporting the accounting, budgeting & forecasting, and financial reporting requirements of the company. This includes supporting and learning the production of budgets and forecasts reflecting relevant business inputs and external factors, production of financial reports, maintaining accounting records, and ensuring data is complete and accurate. The Controller will transition into managing the accounting staff, which includes hiring, coaching and mentoring, performance management and the provision of adequate training and development in order to achieve the strategic goals and objectives of the department and company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant education and CPA designation or similar designation.
  • A combination of education and work experience will be considered
  • Previous experience in the construction sector - private company experience would be an asset
  • Proficiency in MS Dynamics ERP
  • Considered an expert with Excel, and ability to pick up and use new technology easily.
  • Solid business acumen and financial analysis skills
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to present financial statements in logical plain language
  • Thrives in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment
  • Meticulous with an exceptional eye for producing work of the highest quality

Responsibilities

  • Developing, publishing and monitoring a strategic plan and related operational plans, processes and budgets that will contribute to company growth and profitability.
  • Investigating any variances with annual budget (financial CAPEX, etc.) and meet with owners to discuss and review results.
  • Responsibility for ensuring accurate and timely reporting of the company’s financial results.
  • Manage journal entries and reconcile accounts for the monthly or annual closing, identifying and resolving inaccuracies or imbalances.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports, analyze results and maintain financial dashboards. Ensure accurate and relevant reporting, including job cost reporting, capital expenditure reporting, revenue projections, cash flow, departmental reporting and analysis of financial results versus prior periods and budget.
  • Maintain stable cash-flow management policies and procedures to ensure that cash resources are available for daily operations and business development.
  • Provide support for AP, AR and job costing and train new employees and help them onboard as needed.
  • Identify ways to reduce costs, improve processes and ensure all systems are properly integrated.
  • Follow and maintain accounting policies and procedures and maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions.
  • Overseeing the preparation and filing of statutory reporting and remittances to CRA, GST, PST, unions, WorkSafeBC and others; manage external audits such as CRA, PST, GST.
  • Prepare year-end working papers and liaise with external accountants.
  • Perform additional assignments per management’s direction.
