About The Position

Ratehub is a Canadian Fintech company focused on providing a one-stop shop for consumers' financial needs, including saving, spending, borrowing, investing, and protection. They utilize digital application technology and award-winning in-house brokerages to help Canadians make better financial choices. The company operates multiple businesses, including mortgage brokerage, life insurance brokerage, home and auto insurance brokerage, mortgage origination and servicing, a Financial Services Marketplace, and content creation. Ratehub is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to manage accounting and financial reporting for a multi-entity, multi-business-line group. This role is crucial for ensuring financial integrity, strengthening internal controls, scaling financial processes, and partnering with business leaders. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment and be comfortable with both detailed analysis and strategic oversight. The role initially reports to the CEO and will eventually report to the VP of Finance & Operations.

Requirements

  • CPA designation.
  • 7–10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Finance Manager role.
  • Strong command of financial reporting, internal controls, and accounting principles.
  • Experience managing external audits and stakeholder relationships.
  • Advanced Excel/Google Sheets and financial-systems proficiency.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the judgment to know when to dig into the detail and when to step back.

Nice To Haves

  • Quickbooks knowledge is an asset.
  • Experience in fintech, financial services, technology, marketplace, or other high-growth environments.
  • Familiarity with revenue recognition in digital, commission-based, lending, insurance, or advertising business models.
  • Experience with multi-entity consolidations and regulated entities (lending and/or insurance a strong plus).
  • Experience supporting private-equity-backed, venture-backed, or rapidly scaling organizations.
  • Experience with ERP implementations and finance systems optimization.
  • Previous people-leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close across all entities, including regulated mortgage lender, mortgage brokerage, insurance brokerages, and marketplace, membership, and content businesses.
  • Prepare accurate, timely consolidated financial statements in accordance with IFRS.
  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee all core accounting cycles: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, revenue recognition, fixed assets, and intercompany transactions across the group.
  • Own revenue recognition across diverse models: commission and referral revenue, lending net interest and servicing income, insurance commissions, subscription/membership revenue, and advertising/content revenue.
  • Coordinate annual audits and manage relationships with external auditors.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain strong internal controls and accounting policies suited to a regulated, multi-entity fintech.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, tax, and statutory reporting requirements, including obligations specific to a federally regulated lender and licensed insurance brokerages.
  • Oversee corporate tax filings, payroll taxes, HST/GST compliance, and other statutory obligations across jurisdictions.
  • Monitor financial and operational risk, and recommend and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with business-line leaders to provide financial insight that drives better decisions.
  • Support the FP&A leader in budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning, ensuring financial data is accurately reported on by appropriate segments.
  • Prepare financial materials and reporting packages for senior leadership, investors, lenders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Drive automation and continuous improvement across finance operations, building processes that scale with a rapidly growing, multi-business group.
  • Evaluate and optimize financial systems, controls, and reporting infrastructure.
  • Support ERP and finance technology implementations and integrations as the business grows and adds complexity.
  • Establish scalable, repeatable processes that hold up as the company expands into new products and markets.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support recruitment and onboarding as the finance function scales with the company.
