About The Position

The Controller is a senior finance leader responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, internal controls, and overall financial operations. Working closely with the Director, Shared Services and the Finance team, this role supports strong financial stewardship, effective risk management, and long-term financial sustainability. The Controller also partners with leaders across the organization to guide financial planning, support policy development, and align financial practices with strategic and operational goals.

Requirements

  • Chartered Professional Accountant designation required.
  • University Degree in Accounting, Commerce, or Business Administration or a related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, including experience in a senior or supervisory capacity
  • Minimum 2 years of leadership experience in an organization of similar size and complexity
  • Demonstrated experience leading full-cycle accounting, including month-end and year-end close, financial statement preparation, audit coordination, and oversight of internal controls
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards, including Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO)
  • Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation affecting charities, payroll, and compliance requirements
  • Proficiency with accounting systems (Sage experience is an asset) and advanced use of spreadsheets and financial tools

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enforce financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Oversee cash flow, forecasting, and investment management
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements (e.g., tax, CPP, EI, GST)
  • Lead annual audit processes and liaise with external auditors
  • Oversee capital asset management and inventory reconciliation
  • Provide backup support for payroll and accounts payable functions
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annual)
  • Present financial reports and analysis to senior leadership and the Board
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis processes
  • Support departmental budgeting and organizational financial planning
  • Ensure proper reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds
  • Manage external reporting requirements and charitable filings (T3010)
  • Lead and mentor the Finance team, ensuring accountability and performance
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and support staff development
  • Implement cross-training to ensure operational continuity
  • Collaborate on departmental budgeting and workforce planning
  • Identify and implement improvements in financial workflows and systems
  • Enhance efficiency through automation and process optimization
  • Strengthen internal controls and mitigate financial risks
  • Lead financial system enhancements and change management initiatives
