About The Position

The Electrical Sector Energy Control Systems (ECS) Center of Excellence (CoE) is seeking a motivated Control Systems Lead to join its global and multidisciplinary team. This role is based at the Eaton Americas Innovation Center in Brossard (Québec) and offers hybrid work opportunities. The ECS CoE accelerates Eaton’s growth by developing advanced controllers and power systems models across multiple businesses, including UPS, microgrid controls, and energy storage systems. The CoE also enables grid-connected assets with advanced grid support functionalities and leads validation and certification efforts in accordance with applicable grid code standards. This key role will be supporting control development, implementation, and validation for a wide spectrum of power conversion and protection products. Reporting directly to the Technology Manager, the individual will also be responsible for executing plans for the use and adoption of model-based techniques during the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, including the use of Hardware in the Loop (HIL) methodologies during the design and validation of new products within Eaton’s product portfolio.

Requirements

  • PhD in electrical engineering with minimum of 3 years of professional experience OR Master’s degree with minimum of 7 years of experience
  • Strong background in digital control and power electronic control techniques, such as P & Q control
  • MATLAB and Simulink experience
  • Fluency in English and French (working proficiency in both languages). Fluency in French and English is required for this position to communicate with colleagues, customers, and partners located inside and outside of Québec, as well as to understand technical documentation in the field of our industry.
  • Be legally authorized to work in Canada without corporate sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of HIL HW and SW
  • Experience in developing and implementing DER inverter control with auto-code generation tools (e.g., Simulink Coder)
  • Experience with Modbus, CANbus, Typhoon, OPAL-RT.

  • Experience with Agile Development Processes
  • Familiarity with IEEE 1547, UL 1741 SA/SB, and IEC 61850-7-420 standards for grid codes.
  • MATLAB experience with advanced DER inverter controls functions.

Responsibilities

  • Develops control and protection algorithms and firmware for microgrids or Distributed Energy Resources (DER) inverters in UPS and battery storage.
  • Performs modeling and simulation for the power converters control development.
  • Implements, tests, and troubleshoots control firmware.
  • Establishes system & sub-system level control requirements from functional specifications and application needs.
  • Plans and performs control algorithms and firmware development and validation on HIL and lab.
  • Creates technical reports and presentations.
  • Initiates and leads design reviews and technical discussions including brainstorming.
  • Stays current with the latest technologies trends and applies knowledge to the development of control firmware for power converters.
