About The Position

The Control Systems Engineer is a developing role within EVO Power’s Technology team. This position is designed for early-career engineers with a solid foundation in software coding and development, who are looking to apply these skills within control systems in the energy storage industry. The successful candidate will work closely with senior engineers and receive direct mentorship and technical guidance, particularly in software and control systems development. This role offers strong learning and growth opportunities within a fast-scaling, high-impact industry.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
Skills in embedded software development and troubleshooting.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for testing, debugging, and optimizing electronic systems.
Familiarity with safety protocols and industry standards, such as IEC 61508 or equivalent.
Excellent documentation and communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and contribute to cross-functional teams.
Demonstrated knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles.
Understanding of modern software development practices (APIs, modular architectures, CI/CD, DevOps principles).
Ability to translate complex technical concepts into customer-aligned product outcomes.
Proficiency in backlog management tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps).
Knowledge of data-driven product decision-making (analytics, KPIs, user feedback loops).

Nice To Haves

Proven experience in PLC programming, HMI design, and system integration.
Experience in the utility, renewable energy, BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), or microgrid sectors.
Experience with energy management systems, IoT platforms, SCADA, or power systems software.
Exposure to regulatory frameworks and compliance relevant to energy markets (e.g., NEM, grid interconnection requirements).
Familiarity with business case development, product commercialization, and roadmap ownership.
MBA or further qualifications in product leadership, energy systems, or business management.
Exposure to CODESYS or similar IEC 61131-3 compliant development platforms.
Familiarity with Cloud-based platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
Knowledge of control systems, DER integration, or energy data protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC-UA, IEEE standards).
Understanding of cybersecurity principles applicable to operational and energy systems.
Working knowledge of microservices architecture and scalability considerations.
Ability to interpret UX/UI best practices and collaborate with design teams.
Basic technical familiarity with APIs, SQL, Python, or energy simulation tools (not required for coding responsibilities).

Responsibilities

Support the design and development of control systems tailored for battery energy storage system (BESS) applications.
Assist in creating and implementing embedded software for seamless integration within electronic systems and control frameworks.
Assist in developing, programming, and debugging PLC code using industry-standard languages such as ladder logic, function block diagrams, and structured text.
Support customization and configuration of PLC hardware and software to meet specific project requirements.
Assist in implementing and troubleshooting control strategies for various automated systems.
Support in designing user-friendly HMI interfaces for monitoring and controlling industrial processes.
Assist in integrating HMI systems with PLCs to provide real-time data visualization and operator interaction.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical and mechanical engineers, to integrate PLC systems for seamless BESS operations.
Ensure seamless communication between PLCs and other control devices, such as sensors, actuators, and SCADA systems.
Conduct thorough testing of PLC programs to identify and resolve errors and anomalies.
Troubleshoot issues related to hardware, software, and communication protocols to ensure system reliability.
Maintain detailed documentation of PLC programs, configurations, and system modifications.
Support creation of technical manuals and user guides for operators and maintenance personnel.
Stay updated with advancements in PLC technology and recommend hardware or software upgrades when necessary.
Perform routine maintenance and updates to PLC systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance with industry standards.
Adhere to safety protocols and industry regulations when designing and implementing PLC systems.
Ensure systems meet relevant safety standards and conduct risk assessments as needed.
Provide training and support to operators, maintenance teams, and other stakeholders on the proper use and maintenance of PLC systems.
Contribute to continuous improvement by staying at the forefront of technological advancements in electronics and automation.
Oversee the execution of complex engineering projects, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to quality standards.
Ensure measurable improvements in system efficiency through optimized control strategies and proactive maintenance.
Reduce downtime and enhance system reliability through rigorous testing protocols and troubleshooting.
