Control System Engineer/Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)

QuEra Computing, Inc.•Boston, MA
•$160,000 - $200,000

About The Position

QuEra is seeking a Control System Engineer/Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to integrate and maintain the hardware and software systems supporting its quantum controls and software stack. The role works closely with software engineers, physicists, hardware engineers, and test engineers to install, upgrade, maintain, test, and troubleshoot hardware and software control systems for quantum computers. It is a foundational systems engineering role focused on reliability, stability, and operational functionality across development and production environments. The position manages science, development, and testing infrastructure, including hardware-in-the-loop setups, containerized services, networking equipment, and test systems. It also supports automation and orchestration of compute systems, deployment of DevOps tools alongside custom hardware and quantum-specific workflows, system monitoring, incident response, and CI/CD processes across the quantum control stack.

Requirements

  • Practical implementation experience with LAN and WAN technologies on switches and routers, including VLAN configuration, DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP-based services.
  • Practical Linux administration experience (Ubuntu, Debian, or Red Hat), including network operations, application installation, and debugging.
  • Practical Windows administration experience, including network operations, application installation, and debugging.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Git, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools such as GitLab CI or Jenkins.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code platforms such as Ansible, Terraform, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, or the ELK stack, and with logging systems for real-time data monitoring.
  • Hands-on experience with rack-mount servers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5–8 years of experience in Network SQA, Systems Engineering, SRE, or infrastructure engineering roles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting hybrid systems involving embedded devices, custom hardware, or real-time control systems.
  • Knowledge of secure software deployment and product life cycles.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop pipelines or distributed lab/test automation environments.
  • Exposure to scientific computing, HPC, or quantum software stacks.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-moving, interdisciplinary R&D teams.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, maintain, and test software and hardware in heterogeneous systems that control disparate computer system devices.
  • Define, document, implement, and test procedures for quantum computer operations.
  • Manage science, development, and testing infrastructure, including hardware-in-the-loop setups, containerized services, routers, switches, and test systems.
  • Propose or implement automated provisioning, configuration, and orchestration of local and remote compute systems used for control, testing, and simulations.
  • Collaborate with software and test engineering teams to integrate and deploy DevOps tools with custom hardware and quantum-specific workflows.
  • Maintain artifact repositories, test-result dashboards, and infrastructure for tracking regressions and system health.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for access control, system configuration, and lab operations.
  • Support incident response, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis for CI/CD failures or system anomalies.
  • Implement automated monitoring and alerting for systems and services, integrating logs and metrics from embedded systems, test benches, and orchestration layers.
  • Work with CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, and deploying software and firmware across the quantum control stack.

Benefits

  • Equity grants for all new hires.
