About The Position

Working under direct or immediate supervision, this role monitors established rules in the galleries and provides customer service to museum visitors. Work will be assigned and directed by the Security Supervisor or Security Manager. Built in the 1920s by artist and educator Marion Koogler McNay, the Spanish Colonial Revival residence became the site of Texas’ first modern art museum when it opened in 1954. Today, 200,000 visitors a year enjoy works by modern masters including Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The 45,000-square-foot Jane & Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, designed by internationally renowned French architect Jean-Paul Viguier, features major exhibitions annually. The 25 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds include sculptures by Willie Cole, Robert Indiana, Luis A. Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain a Level II Texas Security License
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, background check and fingerprint identification.
  • Must pass CPR training
  • Requirement to serve any day EM Shift, any time, any post, to include events
  • Able to obtain Level II, Texas Security License and pass CPR Training
  • Must pass a physical and background screening
  • Must have high level of integrity
  • Must be tactful and courteous in dealing with visitors, staff, vendors, consultants and others
  • Must have good verbal skills, particularly for communicating with visitors and communicating on the radio
  • Must maintain professional appearance
  • Must be alert and have good concentration skills
  • Must maintain excellent record of attendance and promptness
  • Must be able to work hours as required
  • Must be able to work any shift as assigned
  • Must be able to accept assigned regular days off, and to work weekends and holidays routinely
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Duties require standing for long periods of time, all types of weather.
  • Must be in good general health.
  • Duties require standing posts for long periods of time.
  • Duties may require lifting heavy objects or opening heavy doors and hatches; climbing stairs, ladders, fire escapes, and in the event of an emergency, may have to run or make quick physical response.
  • Will have good eyesight (adjusted) and hearing (adjusted).
  • Should not have night blindness.
  • Clear verbal articulation required for radio communication.

Responsibilities

  • Observes assigned galleries to protect works of art from theft, vandalism, or inadvertent damage.
  • Responsible for gallery opening and closing duties, making sure that visitors maintain proper distance from objects, and assuring smooth traffic flow throughout the galleries.
  • Performs regular art count and verifies art movement within the galleries.
  • Reports any security issues or damage to an object to a security officer.
  • Provides information to visitors.
  • Informs visitors of museum rules and policies for their safety and the safety of the works of art.
  • Directs visitors to exhibitions, exits, rest rooms, and telephones.
  • Checks for water leaks and problems with access points (doors or windows).
  • Reports security, safety, or environmental hazards to a security officer.
  • Participates in training sessions in safety, first aid, CPR, fire and disaster procedures.
  • May assist in medical emergencies involving visitors or staff.
  • Summons medical assistance whenever necessary.
  • Completes appropriate reports.
