About The Position

Control Electrician A is a non-exempt position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of substation electrical equipment/systems. This role requires a 6-8 year working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation electrical equipment, apparatus, and wiring. The position involves working in confined spaces and elevated areas, utilizing various construction equipment specific to the trade. A strong understanding of Electrical Theory, with an emphasis on AC/DC circuits, transformers, and breakers, is essential. The electrician will install over current/recloser schemes and possess a complete understanding of PLC logic. This role may require working independently or with others, and occasionally working long hours during emergency conditions. The Control Electrician A is expected to lead and coach subordinates on the crew.

Requirements

6-8 year working knowledge of 525 kv and below substation electrical equipment, apparatus, and wiring.
Understanding of Electrical Theory with an emphasis on AC, DC circuits, transformers, breakers, etc.
Complete understanding of PLC logic.
Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
Capable of climbing and working at heights up to 60 feet above ground.
Must possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Drivers’ License.
Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
Must supply own safety toed work boots.
Capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
Capable of working in confined spaces/areas.
Able to work independently or with others.
Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment: Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders, articulating man-lifts, trenchers, rough terrain telescopic forklifts.
Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and/or when requested.
Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.
Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
Extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable electrical codes and standards.
Capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation electrical systems.
Proficient in the use of voltmeters, meggers, amp meters, and rotation meters.
Proper use of basic rigging (slings and clevis) and proper hand signals.
Basic operational knowledge of substation equipment (i.e., Transformers, breakers, capacitors).
Thorough knowledge of IEEE device numbering standards.
Basic computer skills (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook).

Responsibilities

Works safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting work of substation electrical equipment/systems.
Installs circuit breakers, transformers, battery banks and chargers, control cable, control panel placement/installation, control buildings, cable tray/raceways, conduit and duck banks, capacitor bank installations (23kv-230kv), circuit switchers, motor-operated switches, annunciators, and fiber optic cable.
Maintains company vehicles, test equipment, and tools in good working condition.
Frequently works in close proximity of energized components with control systems requiring skill and care to protect the client from outages and the lives of themselves and others.
Interprets substation electrical drawings (i.e., conduit details, conduit plans, cable schedules, cable termination prints, schematics).
Communicates with customers and subordinates.
Appraises technical situations and recommends resolutions to problems.
Leads/coaches subordinates on the crew.
Develops and interprets a material list.
Traces out phasing in a substation and verifies to the three-line diagrams.
Determines the proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
Runs the job without supervision.
Terminates, connects, and bundles control wiring neatly.
Uses basic rigging (slings and clevis) and proper hand signals.
Terminates and grounds control cables in control panels and equipment.
Recognizes, corrects, and documents errors/changes in engineering drawings.
