About The Position

The Control Booth Operator is responsible for maintaining the facility's main entry log, tracking resident statuses, staff assignments, and facility access. This role acts as the primary operator for the facility's telephone system, ensuring professional communication with all parties. The operator controls facility security by managing access through magnetic and locked doors, ensuring only authorized personnel enter. They must be familiar with the facility's program schedule and support agencies to anticipate resident movements and facilitate coordination. Additionally, the operator monitors security and fire alarm systems, closed-circuit monitors, and specific software/devices like the Guardian RDIF website/program and Spartan hand-held devices. Maintaining communication with other staff, checking schedules for changes, and practicing good radio communication are key duties. The role also involves maintaining various logs, adhering to professional conduct and ethical behavior standards set by PREA, TJJD, and Cameron County, and complying with all relevant policies and procedures, including those related to Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (ANE). The operator must be a good role model, attend required meetings and trainings, and perform other duties as assigned. Employment is contingent upon funding availability and is at-will.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be over twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Current Texas Driver's License.
  • Must have current automobile insurance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (reading, writing, and understanding) in English is required.
  • Able to submit to a drug urinalysis pre-screening exam.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • If the candidate for employment does have a criminal record, it must be cleared through the requirements as set forth by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Knowledge of standard practices in area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of establishing appropriate relationships, and social adjustment.
  • Knowledge of safety and security techniques and standards.
  • Skills in monitoring and responding to resident behavior.
  • Skills in problem solving and decision making.
  • Skills in both verbal and written communication in English.
  • Basic Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, databases and a variety of software packages.
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule in order to meet the needs of the facility, which may include double shifts (16+ hours) to include weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to reason and make judgments and decisions.
  • Ability to maintain resident and facility confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage time well, perform multiple tasks, and organize diverse activities.

  • Attend work punctually and regularly to provide of care for residents and dependability with co-workers and shift supervisors.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain legible facility main entry log, listing all significant events, resident statuses, assigned staff, facility entry and exiting, logging outgoing calls to service agencies, and logging operational information pertaining to assigned staff, visitors, interns, contract, or volunteers.
  • Maintain accountability of all residents and equipment and ensure that the environment is safe, clean, and secure.
  • Act as the operator, answering the telephone for the facility and always being professional and courteous when communicating with staff, non-staff, and following telephone procedures.
  • Control the security of the facility access.
  • Keep all magnetic and locked doors secured and only open them when recognized facility staff or Chain of Command personnel request access. All others must be escorted.
  • Be familiar with the facility program schedule to anticipate resident movements or needs.
  • Be familiar with support and service agencies to facilitate coordination, e.g. Tropical Texas (AVAIL); medical services; fire safety services; local law enforcement agencies, etc.
  • Monitor security and fire alarm systems, including closed circuit monitors.
  • Knowledge and monitoring of the Guardian RDIF website/program and use of Spartan hand-held device by facility staff.
  • Maintain communication with other staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Check the schedule for changes and advise staff of pertinent information.
  • Practice good discipline in using the radio communications system.
  • Maintain other logs, such as visitors, interns, volunteers, teachers, grievances, medical, resident monitoring logs, etc.
  • Adhere, maintain, and comply with professional conduct and ethical behavior consistent with the standards and policies and procedures expected by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), TJJD, Cameron County, and Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department (CCJJD) at all times, both on duty and off duty.
  • Adhere and comply with all PREA standards and follow zero tolerance towards all forms of sexual abuse and sexual harassment.
  • Adhere and comply with all TJJD standards to include Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (ANE) standards and cooperate with all ANE investigations.
  • Adhere and comply with all CCJJD's and Cameron County's policies and procedures and know how to keep abreast of any changes to said policies and procedures, including maintaining an effective safety program as established by Cameron County.
  • Abide by all federal, state, and local laws; the nature of our profession requires being a good role model and setting a good example at all times.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Perform duties specific to shift as determined by the Facility Administrator, Operations Manager, Shift Supervisor and performs other duties as may be assigned.
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned by the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer and/or designee to include reassignment which is in the best interest of the department.
