Content Lead, Writing & Video

InitializedSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

We're hiring a Content Lead, Writing & Video, to work with and report to our Head of Communications. We're seeking someone with startup and tech experience who can take complex, technical subject matter, across sectors like AI, robotics, and bio, and make it clear and compelling without stripping out the substance. Someone who understands how attention and ideas spread online, how to optimize our content channels, and how to tell our founders' stories, in writing and on video, in the best light for our audiences. This person loves writing and visual storytelling, and enjoys working closely with early-stage founders on the technology and companies they're building. You'll help publish content across our blog, video channels, podcast, newsletter, and socials. You'll collaborate with our social media freelancer and manage freelance videographers on projects. We're not looking for someone whose primary skill is operating a camera. We work with freelance videographers. This role is about crafting story, writing, and directing the shoot, not operating the camera.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of recent, hands-on experience in content, writing, and some video production (applicants with less than 4 years of experience are encouraged to apply if they believe they are a great fit).
  • Strong writing skills, comfortable going deep on complex, technical subject matter for a smart audience without oversimplifying (journalism background a plus, not required).
  • Knowledge of what looks and sounds good on camera/video, and ability to coach others to deliver it.
  • Experience owning and growing a content channel (e.g., podcast, YouTube, social, blog, newsletter).
  • Previous experience working with startups and/or founders.
  • Excitement about tech and its possibilities for the future, and interest in the new media landscape and creator trends.
  • Ability to travel as needed onsite to portfolio companies (NYC, LA, etc.).
  • Organized, able to manage and hit deadlines.
  • Creative and proactive, contributes ideas and has their own point of view.
  • Flexible and patient, able to work around founders' schedules.
  • Interest in learning new tools and working with AI where it's additive.
  • Strong communicator and cross-team collaborator.
  • Positive and easy to work with, takes feedback well, and looks for ways to improve processes and teams.
  • Submit resume + portfolio or digital link highlighting a content channel you owned, and a writing sample if you have one.

Nice To Haves

  • Journalism background

Responsibilities

  • Support production and help with editing direction for the High Bit Podcast.
  • Own the Monthly Founder Newsletter end to end, collaborating with the platform team on content such as launches, talent, events, and news. Draft event/training recaps, short founder interviews, and get creative with writing and building the newsletter.
  • Coordinate portfolio launch posts, High Bit podcast posts, and cross-post content from other channels for the Firm's Blog. Create original trend and analysis pieces in our thesis areas (AI, robotics, bio, etc.) that showcase our perspective and portfolio.
  • Create content that naturally feeds our social media freelancer for YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and TikTok.
  • Script launch videos in coordination with company launches, working closely with the Head of Comms.
  • Help schedule the videographer, scout the location, storyboard, and create shot lists, tag-teaming with the Head of Comms as needed.
  • Run the shoot day, direct and coach first-time spokespeople on-camera, and identify and address problems in the moment (e.g., bad background, slow crew, spokesperson needing support).
  • Own the edit and turnaround of video content, timed to the company's PR launch.
  • Work with Head of Comms / Head of Community and team to help shape talks and trainings, and contribute ideas on topics for founders.
  • Turn events into content, planning for the full event lifecycle (before, during, and after).
  • Grow the podcast's reach, develop a clip strategy, and understand what drives views and listens.
  • Segment content for different audiences (founders, broader tech audience, etc.).
  • Bring ideas for building an audience around original written content in the sectors we invest in.
