About The Position

CarGurus is seeking a Content Engineer to operate and improve the systems and workflows that power its content. This is a content-operations role requiring technical fluency. The role manages structured content in a headless CMS and related databases, coordinates production and update workflows, and helps ensure content is accurate, useful, on-brand, and search-friendly. The Content Engineer partners with editors, SEO stakeholders, engineers, analysts, and other teams to turn content requirements into repeatable processes. Traditional software engineering experience is not required, but comfort learning technical systems, working with structured data, troubleshooting workflows, and using tools such as AirOps and LLM-based content workflows is expected. Success in the first year means maintaining accurate content databases, reliably running production and refresh workflows to agreed timelines, resolving or escalating quality issues, improving recurring processes, building strong cross-functional relationships, and helping increase content output without compromising accuracy, usefulness, differentiation, or brand standards.

Requirements

  • Experience in editorial operations, content operations, content management, publishing, SEO content, digital production, or a related field.
  • Strong technical fluency and ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly.
  • Experience managing structured content, databases, spreadsheets, CMS platforms, workflow tools, or production queues.
  • Careful, methodical approach to data quality, content QA, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects or workflows with competing deadlines and dependencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical or process issues to nontechnical partners.
  • Good editorial judgment and understanding of accurate, useful, readable, and consistent content.
  • Comfort working with AI-assisted content tools while applying human review, fact checking, and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently on varied, routine-to-moderately complex problems and to seek help or escalate issues when appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Contentful or another structured content management system.
  • Experience with AirOps, LLM tools, prompt-based workflows, or other AI-assisted content-production systems.
  • Experience with content modeling, metadata management, taxonomy, templating, or database cleanup.
  • Knowledge of SEO fundamentals, search intent, internal linking, structured data, or content performance reporting.
  • Light scripting, spreadsheet automation, API-based workflows, or no-code/low-code tools.
  • Experience with automotive content, ecommerce content, marketplace data, or other high-volume structured content.
  • Genuine interest in cars, automotive technology, or helping people make informed car-buying decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain structured content databases, including records, fields, statuses, metadata, templates, relationships, and update schedules.
  • Operate publishing and refresh workflows across content types, markets, and production queues.
  • Coordinate content from intake through review, revision, approval, publishing, and post-publication quality checks.
  • Configure and maintain Contentful models, entries, templates, and workflow states within established standards.
  • Use AirOps, LLM tools, and related AI-assisted workflows to support content creation, enrichment, updating, and quality control.
  • Review generated or data-informed content for accuracy, completeness, clarity, consistency, brand voice, and usefulness to car shoppers.
  • Monitor workflow output and investigate issues such as missing data, incorrect formatting, duplicate records, broken links, stale content, or failed production steps.
  • Track answer-engine optimization performance and citation visibility across AI and LLM search experiences, and use citation data to improve briefs, content structure, internal linking, prompts, and workflow outputs.
  • Partner with editors and SEO stakeholders to translate briefs, content standards, and search intent into clear workflow requirements.
  • Maintain production trackers, documentation, QA checklists, and process guides.
  • Identify recurring friction or quality issues and recommend improvements to templates, prompts, validations, queue design, and operating procedures.
  • Support testing of new content formats, data sources, and workflow changes; document results and help determine whether successful approaches should be expanded.
