Content & Editorial Marketing Writer

Flow Engineering•San Francisco, CA
•$100,000 - $150,000

About The Position

Flow is seeking a storyteller to own its editorial voice and decide what the company publishes, when, and why. The writer will create and publish work ranging from long-form essays and customer stories to product launches and newsletters. The role focuses on producing specific, accurate, trustworthy writing for skeptical engineering audiences and helping hardware engineers understand changes in their industry. The writer will interview engineers, work directly with Flow’s CEO, and turn technical expertise and field research into editorial content. They will establish Flow’s editorial standards, build recurring content formats, support company leaders’ writing, improve search and AI-answer visibility, use AI tools in the writing workflow, and evaluate content performance. Success includes learning the product and customers, publishing initial customer and long-form stories, launching a signature series and regular newsletter, and building Flow into a publication hardware engineers turn to for insight into their industry.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of professional writing experience in content marketing, journalism, editorial, or a similar field.
  • A portfolio of published work written by the candidate, including long-form pieces.
  • Ability to explain complex technical topics clearly without oversimplifying them or relying on generic technology marketing language.
  • Ability to assess which technical claims are important and which are merely decorative.
  • Curiosity and ability to learn unfamiliar subjects quickly, ask sharp questions, and earn credibility with engineers and executives.
  • Experience writing with AI tools and a point of view on their appropriate uses and limitations.
  • Preference for hands-on writing and publishing rather than managing others.
  • Ability to pitch ideas, manage several pieces at once, and publish consistently independently.
  • Collaborative, low-ego approach and openness to feedback.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience writing for engineers or technical audiences, especially in aerospace, automotive, energy, defense, or developer tools.
  • An engineering or science background, or experience covering hardware as a journalist.
  • Experience at an early-stage B2B startup.
  • A track record of growing organic search and AI-answer visibility for a technical brand.

Responsibilities

  • Own the editorial calendar and decide what Flow publishes, when, and why.
  • Define Flow’s editorial voice and style, and ensure published work is clear, specific, and accurate.
  • Write essays, guides, and original perspectives about hardware engineering, including requirements, verification, and AI in engineering.
  • Interview engineers at organizations such as Rivian, Stoke Space, and NASA; visit test sites and factories; and produce customer stories.
  • Develop recurring editorial formats, such as customer field stories, technical explainers, and a newsletter.
  • Write announcements, blog posts, and product pages for Flow releases.
  • Help the CEO and engineers publish bylines, LinkedIn posts, and talks in their own voices.
  • Use search and AI-answer visibility (SEO and GEO) to inform content from the outset.
  • Develop a writing workflow that uses AI tools to accelerate research and drafting without lowering quality.
  • Track traffic, engagement, and pipeline influence, and use results to inform future content.
