About The Position

Upholds the Credit Union’s mission of “We do the right thing one member, one employee, and one experience at a time to strengthen the communities we serve” by performing the consumer loan underwriting for the Credit Union. Under the direction of the Consumer Underwriting Supervisor, the Consumer Underwriter reviews all consumer loan applications for completeness and accuracy and applies the Credit Union’s lending policies to make lending decisions. Maintains a working knowledge of the department processes and assists the Consumer Loan Processors as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend detailed and often technical instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to operate an on-line computer terminal (including a good working knowledge of the core computer system, Loan Director, E-Mail, Word and Excel), fax machine, and adding machine.
  • Working knowledge of the products, services, and procedures needed to process transactions.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for over ninety percent of work time.
  • Must be able to closely examine documentation.
  • Requires a high degree of accuracy.
  • Analytical ability necessary to research and resolve complex issues, by reading and understanding detailed reports, technical materials, and/or regulatory requirements and utilizing this information to recommend and/or make strong business decisions.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and efficiently with a diverse group of members, employees, and vendors in stressful situations.
  • Requires communication/listening skills necessary to effectively obtain necessary information to make appropriate and effective decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Some technical school or college training.
  • Three to six months of on-the-job experience operating computer systems and office equipment.
  • Three to six months of on-the-job experience with products, services, and procedures, at least one of which is with the Credit Union.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews consumer loan applications in Loan Director, both internal and indirect, applying the Credit Union’s Lending Policy to make sound lending decisions.
  • Assists the Member Service Representatives and dealers with underwriting questions and complicated loan applications.
  • Verifies income and approves other conditions per loan approval requirements.
  • Reviews requests that pertain to existing loans, such as Collateral Switch, Collateral Release Requests, rate changes, payment due date changes and adding/cancelling debt protection.
  • Reviews credit bureau requests, both received through E-Oscar and directly from members.
  • Corrects reporting issues via the E-Oscar system.
  • Reviews student loans through LendKey.
  • Completes internal audits of direct consumer loans.
