About The Position

This position is responsible for reviewing and underwriting consumer purpose loans. The role involves identifying, analyzing, and evaluating loan risks and compensating factors, approving, suspending, or denying loan applications, determining eligibility, and problem-solving to provide customers with alternative solutions. The Consumer Underwriter ensures that loans are approved within the Bank’s standards and procedures, and regulatory underwriting guidelines.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in business or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.
  • Strong knowledge of credit reports and determination of credit worthiness while maximizing productivity and minimizing credit risk.
  • Properly review third party credit and collateral data.
  • High level of confidentiality required.
  • 1-3 years' experience credit underwriting, loan review or related experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Sound credit judgment.
  • Good organizational skills and attentive to detail.
  • Able to operate required computer applications, typewriter, 10-key, and other basic business machines.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
  • Able to interpret various instructions.
  • Ability to compute financial ratios, cash flow and debt service.
  • Ability to read a variety of books, magazines, and instruction manuals.
  • Ability to prepare memos, internal loan applications, and reports, using proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Ability to communicate distinctly with appropriate pauses and emphasis, correct pronunciation (or sign equivalent), and variation in word order using present, perfect, and future tenses.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately evaluating the credit worthiness of potential borrowers.
  • Evaluating the adequacy of the applicant’s income and probability that the customer will be able to meet expected financial obligations.
  • Reviewing borrower’s credit reports and the manner in which obligations have been met and financial affairs managed.
  • Completing all underwriting functions in accordance with various program requirements.
  • Understanding Bank’s loan policy and identifying exceptions and non-compliance with loans while performing credit underwriting.
  • Staying informed regarding bank loan policy, changes in lending standards, and related legal requirements.
  • Maintaining and updating knowledge of underwriting requirements and policies.
  • Staying informed of modifications and updates in software applications.
  • Providing suggestions for improvements in underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination with Bank personnel and management.
  • Assisting and supporting Bank personnel as needed.
  • Answering questions of loan personnel regarding policies and procedures.
  • Attending and participating in meetings and committees as required.
  • Keeping Central Credit Underwriting Manager informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Completing required reports and records.
  • Reporting technical problems to appropriate personnel for investigation and to prevent reoccurrence of problems.
  • Completing special projects as assigned.
  • Keeping work area clean, secure, and well maintained.
  • Frequently monitoring 'queue' pending loans.
  • Ensuring that the Central Credit Underwriting maintains an acceptable if not exceptional service level.
